You'd rather have a 70200 mk1 vs mk2? If we're being realistic, if you can afford one, you can afford the other :)

I can afford it, but I really dont use the long end that much to justify buying the version II....as great as it is! :p

I plan on using mine for everything in-between :D It's just so good that I no longer feel the need to even keep my 50 and 24-70. My 11-16 takes the wide, and everything else my 70200 II can handle.

My mk1 and mk2 are sitting downstairs next to one another. Massive, massive difference in IQ at f/2.8. I hope to have my mk1 sold soon :) Considering a refurb 70200 II can be had for $2k, and the mk1 can sell for $1600, I feel the price difference is more than fair.

For my 5D2:

Canon 24-70 L for occassions when I need a versatile zoom lens and wide end for landscapes.
Canon 50 L which is the last lens I'd ever give up
Canon 85 L for close portraiture (probably the next lens I'll buy, which is probably within two years reach)
Canon 100 L for macro and the rare occassions I need slightly longer tele

I would love to have the Zeiss 21 mm and the Canon 135 L and also the Canon 70-200/2,8L IS II USM. But the Zeiss cost much money and honestly, it is not that often I feel I need a prime 21 mm. The Canon 135 L would be nice but since I have the 100 L it seems not realistic that in the near future I would invest in the 135 L. It is not that often I need a longer tele lens. And that is why the 70-200 L is not a realistic option either; expensive and wouldn't be used that often.

I pretty much own everything I want/need.

5DII
17-40L (I guess I could replace this with a 16-35L II, but I don't shoot wide too often)
24-70L
70-200 2.8L IS (I guess I could replace this with a Mark II, but the Mark I produces great images as well)
50L
85L II

At some point in the future, I hope to own these:

35L (already have this)
135L
300L f4 IS
Zeiss 2.8/21 Distagon
Zeiss 1.4/50 Planar

Then I will stop buying lenses.
