Sin City Roller Girls vs Santa Cruz Derby Girls

So the SCRG's played against the SCDG's and it was a blast to shoot. I did minimal processing to the pictures (re-sized only) because it was a double header that night and I was up until 2am figuring out which pictures out of the 1600+ I would keep. The casino actually turned on a few more lights this time and I was able to bump my shutter speed up to 200 this time, much better than the 1/125 I usually have to shoot (no strobes).

I think the first would be the best if the crop were a little tighter and it was strait...The second all I can look at is her butt as that is what stands out in the photo.

I think the other girl in the photo had the same problem.

Which color were the Santa Cruz girls wearing. I'm from Santa Cruz and I was just wondering. I've never been to a match before but I think I might have to go check it out sometime soon.

great shots! That is a pretty well lit track for derby and good use of it!
though i'm sure you can crank the iso up quite a bit on that 1dIV if you ever need the higher ss's in crapier light yeah, i'm jealous hehe

I forgot I had posted this...but came back to see responses. I know the horizon is off on some of them but like I said... I did minimal editing to get the pics up as fast as possible so the ladies and fans can see them the same night or next day. Those pictures that I consider 'keepers' are the ones that I take more time with to straighten and do a lot more PP on them.

Yes, the lighting is usually horrible at most derby events but we've been able to talk to the staff and convince them that we need as much light as we can. The only drawback is that it will warm up the ballroom (but if they think about it, that can create more drink sales. ).

I recently picked up a 300 2.8 and can't wait for the next bout to see how it performs. I've been slowly adjusting the ISO up and will crank it up a little more at the next bout and see how that works in getting me higher shutter speeds. I'd love to get to 1/500 but that's a pipe-dream unless we get into an arena with some serious lighting. Then again, roller derby is a gritty sport and perhaps too much light would take away from the feel of it in the pictures...

We've set up strobes after practicing and conferring with another derby photographer and we loved the results...but I only had 2 580's at the time with the p/w TT5's and wish I had 2 more flashes to set up complete track coverage or at least one more to put mid-track to provide coverage in that area. This just adds to setup time and more risk of people kicking over the lightstands.

You say that you want a faster SS, but you can easily go above 1600 iso with your camera. My 7d doesn't handle noise as well as your camera and I shoot all shots for my home derby league at iso 2500.

Tonight at practice in the warehouse I bumped the ISO to 3200 and was able to get to f2.8 and 1/200 on average. For the first time I set a custom white balance and now to see how they came out.

This 300mm definitely cramps the crop... I'm going to have to either go back to my 70-200 or find another spot to take pics instead of right next to the track. Decisions decisions.

I use my 70-200 on the 7d and a17-55 on my 40d for up close stuff.
