About three weeks ago I was shooting at the zoo, and on one particular shot I noticed a sort of shutter lag on my 50D. It wasn't a delay from pressing the shutter button until actuation of the shutter. Rather, the shutter seemed to hold open for much longer than the shutter speed was set in camera. I think I was around 1/250, but the shutter actuated as if I were at around 1/5 or so. It only happened once. No settings were changed before or after that particular occurance. Unfortunately I didn't make note if that particular shot was heavily over-exposed.

Then last weekend, the same thing happened twice in succession. I immediately reviewed the photos and they weren't over-exposed. The shutter responded as if it were taking a much longer exposure than than it was. Weird.

The only thing that's changed recently on my camera is the lens. I got a 70-200 f/4 IS in December. And it's only happened with that lens attached. But it's been so intermittent I don't know if that's the cause, nor if it even could be the cause.

If some responses are to send it in to Canon, I'm fine with that, and will do so if it worsens. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue with the 50D.

I've had this issue for 2 years of owning my 40D. It will happen maybe once out of 1000 shots. You hear the shutter go off, then the mirror takes a split second longer to flip back up. I believe the shutter is going the same speed, it's just the mirror flips down, and should immediately flip back up but is taking a little longer. The issue hasn't gotten any better/worse in my 2 years and I've learned to live with it since it's very hard to reproduce the issue and doesn't happen very often for me. The only time this is really an issue is if I'm doing a quick 6.5FPS burst and then it gets hung up a split second longer so I don't get all my shots. This happens on all my lenses 17-55 2.8 IS, 70-200 4L ISm 17-85 IS, 55-250IS.

Thanks for the response, soupnasi. That sounds exactly like the issue I've experienced. Although I was set for single shot each time.

This has been going on with my 40D for a year now. Hasn't gotten any worse, it's about once every 800-100 shots so I'll live with it. :(

This has happened to my 50D a few times.. No difference or incorrect exposure.. It only does it when shooting in Av but never in Manual mode..

It is weird, I've learned to ignore it..
