I decided to try my first L prime as borrowlens had a 30% off rental special, it arrives at work and while on a conference call i shoot my lunch without realy paying too much attention to what i'm doing. once i get time to try it I'm sure I'll fall in love.

just wondering which most would pick for shooting on a 50d the 50 L or the 35L I have the 85 1.8 and love it. I'm thinking the 35 would be better as a walk around prime

well, the 35mm would end up being 56mm, the 50mm would end up being 80mm on your 50D.

really depends on what you like to shoot, and whether the 35mm or 50mm would be wide enough for your use.

either one would complement the 85mm you already have. I've never used the 35mm so I can't vouch for it.

Pward was your focus accuracy any better after getting it back from Canon? I feel like I miss so often with this lens that something is not right. When I shoot with my 24-70 I almost never miss but with the 50L I feel many times I just get nothing in focus or I am just slightly off.

What's strange is many times I get very sharp shots at 1.6 to 2.8 but sometimes even with careful focusing I get results that just seem way off or at least not right.

I heard about the focus shift issue, could that be what I am getting?

honestly I haven't had much time to get out and shoot with it. Canon fixed the front focusing it was experiencing. I have from time to time noticed it miss focus on occassion, but usually that's at f/1.2 and I'm usually fairly close to the subject.

what distance are you shooting? I know a lot of people comment that even though the MFD is 1.5 feet, it really should be listed as 3 feet like the 85L.

Usually at pretty close distances. Pretty random really. Sometimes wide open and usually 2.8 or wider. I understand depth of field and all. Wonderful lens when it's right but just very random with my results. I think I will send it in since it's under warranty and go from there.

Thanks

I guess I have to hope borrowlens offers the 35 at 30% off rental so I can try it next.

I am intrigued by the sigma 24 1.4 with it's macro ability just fear after using this 50 1.2 for a bit I will be spoiled and hate to send it back
