Hi all,

Have an offer to trade my sigma 28mm 1.8 for a sigma 17-70 2.8?

I mostly shoot inside, kids, family shot.

Is the 17/70 suitable for indoor basketball?

Is this a fair trade?

Post your thoughts and opinions.

Thanks

I'd rather have the prime over the zoom, but thats me. I'm a sucker for primes.

2.8 is marginal for indoor b-ball. I'd sell the 28/1.8 and try to pick up an 85/1.8 Canon.

I think you'll use your nifty fifty more than the 28mm f/1.8 for the extra reach since they're both fast lenses. (It also depends on your location; in this case, I'm assuming you're in the stands). The sigma 17-70 would be a nice addition to your focal length range for the wider end. You would also benefit from the 55-70mm range with the f/2.8 because it'll be faster than the 55-250mm.

I dont really shoot indoor sports but i shoot with primes so i would keep the 28mm, but the 17-70 might be more versatile if you enjoy shooting your family just different angles and such.

i had the older sigma 17-70 and i never used it above 30mm, it just became to soft and IQ wasnt that great. that being said i have never used the 2.8 version.

the sigma isn't a constant f2.8 you know...so i'd probably keep the 28mm...unless you want the walk around range of the 17-70mm...but i wouldn't be trading it for indoor sports shots
