This is a really good lens for indoor swimming; the only thing better I can think of would be the EF 200mm f/2L (external link), but at over $5k, I'm not going there anytime soon. I would think this would be a little short for surf, but I have never done that. But for Surf, I would consider extra reach more valuable than having f/2.8. I would consider the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L (or even a 400) before this lens.

Here are some samples from a recent indoor kids swim meet, with horrible lighting. My shutter speed was far too slow for sports, but I did not want to go to ISO 6400 or above:

Really nice shots! But I've gotta ask: what is this game? It looks like a pro playing against a bunch of 7th graders! :)

It is a Kansas high school basketball tournament. The player is 6'8" Perry Ellis. Here is another pair of shots of him using the 70-200 and one with the 16-35 II.

The 70-200 f/2.8 is the workhorse lens for sports photography. The original versions (IS and non IS) were excellent and the new Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens is even better. Quite sharp. It will take an agressive crop much better than the old versions.

On Wednesday, I finally got to take the lens to the mountain to test it out on some ski racing. I wasn't sure how well the AF would work in the heavy snow, but I was very impressed. Also, this is the first time that I have allowed this lens and the 7D to get wet.
I stood there for an hour and a half and the snow was beginning to accumulate on the lens, before melting, but I was confident in the water "resistance" of my set up. So far everything seems fine, but I'm open to suggestions for a rain cover for this set up.

Fantastic shots! Are you using a flash? What are the settings on the 70-200mm? I take shots at games and dear God they look nothing like yours. Nice work
