When I'm using my flash mounted on my camera's hotshoe I use E-TTL. Off-camera, as with a softbox or umbrella, I switch the flash to Manual mode for consistent exposures.

These two sites should offer you lots of insights into using your flash:

Great Photos!

How does ETTL work with bounced flash or softbox/umbrella? How does the camera know the difference between these different settings? Does the pre-flash determine how much light to put out? Can I do the same with my 430EX-II?

TIm... what's up, man? In a situation like this, it's pretty hard to get the white balance right, especially when the ambient temp is different than the day-light balanced speedlight... what color was the wall that you bounced your speedlight off of?

I'm doing well! Yeah, WB is tough in this situation. The walls were beige. I just use auto WB and then tried to adjust in pp.

I have a hard time with having consistent color temp when I do that... how many takes did you have and did they all have same (similar?) temps?

I know, varying color temps can be a pain. Thankfully, this time, they all came out consistent. I took three group shots.
