i would love an updated AF system w/ a wider spread of cross-type sensors.

otherwise, the 5D2 has been great.

+1 from me regarding the updated AF system w/ a wider spread of cross-type sensors

I would also like a multicontroller placed on the grip.

Those 2 features would me the 5D Mark 3 a candidate for the perfect camera!

I hope it doesn't have a swivel screen and I hope it isn't more than $3500. The prices in the UK are always much higher than the States, so this would price it at >=£2500

I agree ! I assume the body only will be $3500 minimum and it comes with a swivel screen.

I don't think I'll be buying one any time soon, but I sure hope Canon engineering don't sacrifice button layout to add a swivel screen like they did with the 60D. It's totally lame.

I've had the 50D, 7D, 5DII and now own the 1DIV. I loved the image quality of the 5DII but wished for more cross type sensors for the autofocus. I shoot weddings and love being able to frame people where ever I want without recomposing. That was the biggest reason for going to the 1DIV, also dual cards (I can't loose my client's images!!). I have had no issues at all with the 1DIV but I'm still looking forward to an update to the 5DII. If it can track like the 1DIV I'll get one.

With the 7D I used it for 2 weddings and didn't like the images. It was front and back focusing (cant explain why). I tried micro adjusting using a lens cal but didn't work. I think that Canon is cramming in too many pixels into their C size sensor. I know this has nothing to do with the focusing but the images were not as sharp as the 5DII, i might be too critical. My opinion but I didn't work for me.

I shoot my 20D at ISO 800/1600 all the time and don't get very much noise. Maybe you were consistently underexposing? Just a thought..

I was thinking the same thing. I shoot 1600 all the time with my 20D with minimal noise. I can effectively use 3200 if I use noise reduction. I have noticed if I shoot RAW at 3200 and then make a lot of adjustments, especially exposure, I get more noise that I can compensate for with noise reduction software.

I would be shocked if the 20D outperforms the 50D.

One thing I'm happy about is that the megapixels isnt some crazy amount like 30 MP. I rather have them focus on more high ISO. better AF, better response times. cmon, make something like the d700, but with video. arg! touchscreen? wow... please DONT. don't waste your R&D money to make some gimmicky crap like that...

We had a thread back in 2010 about what to expect with LCDs. I even stated back then we would have articulating screens and touchscreens. Boy did that create a stir... :)

How funny to see it all come true despite so many with displeasure with the predictions.

I recall reading somewhere that the wider spread is not possible due to some technical limitations :(

That's true. It's a matter of the absolute distance of the AF pixel array from the lens axis, and it's true of every manufacturer. You won't see any any manufacturer's camera with AF sensors more than about 15 or so millimeters off axis. That puts them pretty far out on a 15x22mm sensor, not as far out on a 24x36mm sensor.

The capabilities of the sensor at the furthest distance appears to be a matter of how much money the manufacturer wants to put into it. At 1Ds prices, you can get a decent sensor all the way out to the limits. At 5D prices, you might not get a sensor out at the absolute limits at all.
