I have been using my 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Kit lens on my 7D here in Iraq with favorable results. It's very versitile. I can shoot events, sports, portraits, group photos, zooms and even macro.

Using a camera bag isn't really feasible most time for most of the shots I need to do, neither is using a tripod.

My compaint is that its a bit soft. I also have to to keep the white balance and ISO up if I expect to get a good shot indoors.

I have the budget to upgrade to a very nice L type lens. I have solid budget of atleast 2500 for 1 or 2 lenes. It would be nice to get something that will really add to the type of shots I can get considering I'll probably still keep this lens.

A few I am considering 28-300 3.5L IS USM, 70-200MML 2.8 IS USM, 10-22MM F3.5, 100-400MM L., 50MM 1.4 SIGMA.

NewB stuck here in Iraq. Can u give me some suggestions?

have you considered something like a sigma 30mm f/1.4 ? only reason i am suggesting it as you may find it better on a crop than the 50mm

Go for the 15-85 IS to replace the 28-135, Big difference in terms of quality between the two

Should run you about $700, For the rest, pick up a nice 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, you'll appreciate the white color in the desert sun and you'll appreciate the kind of shots you can get with it

If you're into portraiture then the Sig 50 is a very good choice but I wouldn't use it as a walk around since you're on a crop. A 15-85, 17-55 or even a sigma 17-50 OS will satisfy you in terms of IQ if you want a general walk around zoom but since you want something faster the sigma or canon would be a better pick. If you want wide angle, the tokina 11-16 f2.8, sigma 10-20 or the more expensive canon 10-22 will serve you fine though the tokina is 2.8 in case that matters to you.

Here is some ideas what my camera is being used for in Iraq. Using my Kit lens for USO show here done here in Iraq with the Redskins Cheerleaders. It wasn't easy because they were moving around fast and it was indoors in poor light. OFC Not pro but not too shabby either.

Fred,

I think you might benefit from a faster zoom lens. You might also appreciate something wider for landscape, etc. Your 28mm is rather long on the 7Ds crop sensor, perhaps the 17-55 2.8 would be a good general use zoom. Its a fAster lens and the wider perspective might be useful as well.

Given your budget, a 70-200 f4 IS would be a nice addition as well.

Really just wanted to let you know that AAFES has a 15% online coupon good through April 2nd. Check the marketplace forum for the specific code. With the coupon the 50mm 1.4 is a screaming deal in case you want a prime.

Good luck with your decision. With your budget you should be able to pick up 2-3 solid performers.

I would suggest 16-35L II USM for you because it's weathersealing and FL.

Can't go wrong with these two: 17-55 f2.8 IS and 70-200 f4 IS.

When I bought my XS, it came with 18-55 kit lens. I then added a 50 1.8 and a flash.

After I sold the XS and got a 7D, it came with 28-135 which I sold right away and bought a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. It is one heck of a lens for the price.

Since you have a good budget for L lenses, I would suggest 17-55 f/2.8 (which is pretty much an L lens) for a great range or a 16-35 f/2.8L II. :)
