Can someone tell me if the Canon EF 2x Extender II will work with the Canon 100-400mm L IS and my 5D Classic? If so, will the auto focus work? I have the lens and am thinking about buying the extender. Shooting outdoors and/or in well lit areas. Your help appreciated.

The auto focus will not work with the 2x Extender II.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I don't even try the 1.4x with the 100-400....althought it would likely work in bright light with good contract. If the 100-400 will not get you there on a crop body....time for the serious glass like a 500 or 600.

The 100-400L will not work mated to a 1.4 regardless of the ambient lighting conditions on a crop body. Only way it will maintain AF is if you tape the pins per below or use a 1D body.

As far as responsiveness goes after you tape the pins and are using a crop body and if the lighting conditions are nice you will have no problem with the AF. Of course your not going to do any BIF or fast action sports captures but it works just fine for normal stills and slow moving subjects.

Here below are some real world captures using the 7D, in manual handheld, center focus point, with the 100-400L and the Kenko 2x MC4 DGX:

I definitely agree it would be nice if we all could afford and experience the 500 & 600 teles but its only a pipe dream for many.

Regards, ;)

I won't even dream of a 500 or 600. Now if we are talking a 5DII...that is another story. ;)

You'd be better off picking up a crop body over trying to use an extender...
