Great challenge. Wish I'd had my camera with me this week at ConExpo/ConAgg in Las Vegas. One booth had Irish lassies dancing and another had men in lederhosen. My mother is Irish - my father German. I could have scored a double. I'll still try to get something in.

All I want is just a little more than I'll ever have.

Here in Louisiana our main culture is FOOD!

the food items shown are produced either in my town or fairly closeby. The book Cane River takes place just a little up the road from me.

Granny... What is specific to our family is the "piece of cloth" on her head. :)

A typical thing to make in my scandinavian culture, waffles. Our kids love to help, and they where so proud when we ate the waffles.

man I had a hard time with this one, total brain fart. Photomom's food shot is neat - that idea never crossed my mind. Gotta love Tony chackers, although no one carries it where I live now...

About the best plan I had was to take a shot of the family portraits lined up on my mom's wall. She's got some that date back to the late 1800's that show the family holdings in "the old country."

Big Apple - love the shot. kinda what I was looking for. IMO (and not meant to be any negative commentary on your shot) a B&W or sepia conversion would look great.

In the end I'm voting for Big Apple since the "grandparents/elders was the image the challenge conjured up in my mind.

my vote is for Big Apple as well - I want to hear the story of the fabric!

anotherweb - no Tony Chachere??? Aw no. The plant is less than five miles from my house. When you pass there you can smell the spices. Oh, in case you don't know the pronunciation - it's Sash-uh-ree.

I had wanted to do something about my ancestors being kicked out of France and coming here, but wasn't able to do that.

Grandparents came from "Mother Russia". The fabric was woven by my great-great-grandmother and it was given to the female descendants at their marriage. It survived the revolution. The floral model represents a very important flower for the people in the village where my grandparents came from. No clue on what`s its name. In Romanian (i am romanian) we call it "batic" it`s similar with the indonesian "batik" but somehow different. That is the story of the wonder-granny and her "piece of cloth" :)

Too much business travel this week - couldn't get one in.

My vote for Big Apple - even before the great story.

Oh, I think I need to be straight this time. And forgive me for beeing more critiqal than usual. But I must say that there is only one picture here that is having an image quality that I can vote on. And that is photomoms picture. A small adjustment of the white balance, so that the white part on the boxes would have been clear white would have made it perfect. To mark the white and black point in the histogram would have improved it to.

Big Apples picture is totaly off with the white balance, and very soft. I would recomend you to work more on getting the picture sharp. f/7.5 at 1/250 should have given a sharper picture than this. Mybe think through how you are standing, holding the camera etc will help you.. A sharp picture here, should have brought up details in the skin, and structures in the Iris, and could have made an excelent portrait.

To get the white balance right, take all shots in RAW, and use DPP, choose pick white balance... and then use the little tool there and mark in the eye or on the white part on the corner. That would have done magic on youre picture.

Edmyloo... If you would have given more contrast, and put the black point on the picture, it would have given the picture more pop. Black and white ask for contrast, lines and structure. This picture just ask for more PP... .:)
