Here's a little test I did just a few moments ago. Sigma 17-50 vs. 50mm f1.8 (Canon).

Sigma @ 45mm. Both lenses @ f5.6, both shot @ ISO 100. Photo's taken on a tripod, remote shutter release, Live View w/ maximum magnification for AF lock.

Sigma Full Image (Click for various sizes up to 100%)

I honestly can't even distinguish any major differences between the two. Both are razor sharp. I definitely love the focal range of the Sigma, it's such a great all-around lens!!

I have both of the lenses and I can't tell the difference between the two either on a lot of shots. To me, the biggest factors that make the Sigma better (if you've got the money to spend, of course) is the faster autofocus and the OS feature of the Sigma. Seems that I can take shots at much slower shutter speeds with the Sigma than I can with the Canon 50mm/1.8. Talking about hand-held shots here.

Plus, like you said, I just like the focal range. The 50mm is a great, inexpensive lens, but I felt like my hands where tied at times when I wanted to get a wide angle shot of something.

Have you noticed the same?

So I just pulled the trigger on this lens! Should be here tomorrow. I was going to get it from RGB photo here in the UK. Was hovering over it all day Sunday, decided I'd give them a call today to see how quickly they could get it to me before ordering. I go to their website this morning to find they've stopped trading today!

Needless to say I've ordered it from another store.....

Yup, I definitely had that problem too. When I had my T1i I had sold the kit lens for a while and only had a telephoto and my 50, so it stayed on the camera almost 100% of the time. And there were a LOT of times I couldn't get as wide of a shot as I had wanted. Again, very very pleased with the Siggy.

looks like they haven't accepted any offers yet. their eBay store is showing 7 offers now (for only 2 lenses). I think I'm gonna purchase from amazon...

i want to purchase, but Amazon's site now says:

Item Under Review

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

So many people keep sending back the sigmas thinking they are bad because of this forum... Hence this problem noted above...

What do you mean "because of this forum"? This thread or some anti-Sigma bias on this forum in general?

They didnt except my offer of $610 over the weekend or yesterday and the offer expired on E-Bay.

So i just called the 47stPhoto main 1-800 number and spoke with a gentlemen Named Eli and he left me on hold for a few minutes, came back and sold me the lens for $615 with free shipping and definitely assured me it was an opened boxed item. He stated they had the lens in stock but i did not ask him how many were left.

Regards, ;)

Thats Great !

Looks like $615 is their rock bottom price which is not too bad considering how so many various lenses have been going up in price lately or the way some vendors like Amazon is allowing 3rd party vendors to jack the price-up on the Tokina 11-16 to $779 which is out of stock at both B&H & Adorama whom still has the price at $599.00

Regards, ;)
