Purchased one of these Sigma lenses to perform a quick test to actually see for myself what other owners of this lens really like about it versus the popular Canon 17-55/f2.8 which i previously had a copy of.

I know Lightrules has personally owned quite a few copies of the 17-55/f2.8 so he was able to make a more definitive assessment between the 2 lenses versus myself only owning 1 copy of the Canon.

IMHO, i would have to place the copy of this Sigma i just received yesterday on very even terms in regards to IQ & performance and can only give the Canon an edge in acquiring AF slightly faster.

Below are a few test shot examples taken with a 60D under ambient light using NO flash in the kitchen area. Included was simple Battery tests to check for any focusing issues since we all hear this scenario with the Sigma primes. Ambient lighting was not all that great so i had to use a higher ISO on the battery tests then i would have liked.

EXIF intact:

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/Silverfox111/IMG_0613batterytest.jpg

---------------

So once again IMO i quess i can see why alot of folks are indeed satisfied with this Sigma since i only paid $615 for a new copy versus the Canon now going for an average price tag of $1150.

If i decide to keep the Sigma it will be contingent on if i will and can get used to the AF ring turning when focusing and the lack of FTM which i am so accustomed to having. The lack of FTM i can live with but cant get used to my left hand index finger not touching the focusing ring !

It's a very nice lens indeed, add ring USM and it'd be perfect.

Nice. Playing around more with mine, I've become completely happy with my purchase.

Nice. I believe this will be my next lens. Seems like a fantastic alternative to the 17-55 f/2.8.

Seems I will have to go this route also as Canon has priced themselves out for me.

I hope to buy this lens...eventually. I'm just waiting for now, with all the prices driven up due to the disaster in Japan. I'm GASing pretty hard, but not hard enough to overcome my stinginess.

Thanks for the review. The Sigma is on my list as well. Canon's price on their 17-55mm is insane!

Good stuff. I'm happy with mine. Perfect lens for its price point. Canon's 17-55mm is insultingly overpriced.

The Sigma is also built better, has a better warranty and comes with a lens hood and a case

Sorry, but a $1000 lens i expect to have those things, L or not :/

Do not know what Canon is thinking. What bugs me the most is the removal of the international warranty.

Yes, opposite to the Sigma 70-200, but the Sigma 17-50 zooms the same way as the Canon 70-200 and all other Canon zooms.

Ever wish Sigma would pick a direction and stick to it?
