This is awesome. Now I think I may finally get a Domke. Hopefully the bag isn't too big, although it looks it but we'll see. If it is, oh well, I can always return it or sell it.

I was looking for a smaller bag when I bought this one and I think that it's the perfect size for carrying around. I had bought the Lowepro Stealth Reporter D650AW and I thought that it was WAY too big for everyday lugging around.

Here are more pics for your viewing pleasure. I have the Tamrac Adventure 9, LowePro Slingshot 300AW and Domke F-802 with the 40D+grip and 70-200IS attached for reference.

I know this thread has kind of died down a bit, but could someone please post the size of the insert? Tenba's site doesn't list it, and I'm thinking of a DIY bag. Thank you!!

Sorry I never posted photos. Here are a few I just took quickly, so sorry for the quality. Hope they give you some idea.

The lens in front of the insert is the canon 100mm f/2.8.

This is the messenger bag I bought at the Fossil store to hold the insert. 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens.

Here are a couple more with the 70-200 w/ 1.4 extender, and the 100 macro. Without the extender, the 70-200mm fits perfectly.

One more showing you the inside. It came with 4 dividers. I can fit a the 40D gripped with lens in the center, and a couple of lenses on either side or a flash. The lens in the photo is the Sigma 10-20 and the flash is a 430EX.

Thanks again for the heads-up on this insert. I bought one and it works great in both my Domke and National Geographic messenger-type bags. Highly recommended.

...FA230 with Tenba insert
QUOTED IMAGE

Compared to the Domke insert the Tenba provides more options as to how you can set up the inside of the bag and it can also hold the big L's as well (sorry Jon). I've had the Tenba in my F-802 for a few months and I don't think that I would want to take it out! As a matter of fact, when I finally got my Domke inserts I was somewhat disappointed in the size of the inserts...

Hi & thx to all that provided info & shots!

Thanks to Jon, I've been eyeballing the F-802 (external link) as well as the FA-230 insert (external link). The 230 insert would not only be useful for the 802 but for my "generic" messenger as well :) But seeing as the 230 is only 2.5" in depth, I can't imagine my lenses will fit with the [reversed] hoods on. With hoods on, I'm looking at 10cm (4") which I should think an impossible fit in a 230... .

Enter the Tenba Pro Digital 2.0 insert (external link)! Now at 13cm (5") the hoods have ample room! The F-802 has an official internal depth of 8cm (3") but based on the photos in this thread, it must "bend" laterally to fit. Alternatively, the Tenba would also make for a nice insert for the F-804 (external link), which is 8" deep, leaving ample room for a sleeved Notebook!

If you're lens-happy, you could even fit both the FA-230 & Tenba in the F-804... :p

But before I buy, has anything else (insert-wise) come up on the market? After all, it's been a few years since everyone posted in this thread... .

p.s. A pricey alternative (adds to the flexibility maybe but also to the price) would be to buy 3~4 FA-280 (external link) single compartments. at 10x10cm (3.75"x4") it may even fit better than the 13cm (5") Tenba, but again, the price is not comparable... .

I got one yesterday (along with a Tenba Messenger) and I was pleased with the size of the insert but the velcro placement & the divders were quite dissapointing. Maybe more flexible than the Domke but hardly well thought-out imo - Why is there no vertical strip on at least three areas of the insert? Plus the divders are way too small to be good for anything other than an entry-DSLR with APS-C zoom...

But... with the addition of some more velcro and other dividers, there is potential. Keeping in mind that the insert / dividers are about 50% of the thickness of standard (Kata, Lowepro, ...) dividers so you do give up quite a bit of safety when using these inserts...

There's a 70-200 f/4 under the 50D...

That's the stuff in the insert. Smaller gear is stowed in other areas of the bag.

The silly application of velcro and all but useless dividers...
The yellow one is from my Kata and is representative of std dividers

Used in a standard Messenger which (luckily) has roughly the same dimensions :D

Travelller, I agree completely. I still haven't taken the time to figure out how to make this insert work for me. I need to add Velcro uprights and larger dividers.

If anyone has created a workable configuration with this insert and the F-802 I'd love to see what you've done.

Thx for the tip :) It actually looks like the best bet so far, however I'm not sure the "lid" is a good thing... are you actually using this and/or have you seen anyone using it with either the F-802/804 or Tenba...?

Agreed! I was just "admiring" my Tkink Tank UD35 and one real benefit is that the inner compartment is completely lined with velcro-friendly felt! I think we need TT to creat an insert for us...
