The front of the car or the model are the obvious points of interest in these, but neither seems to be sharp?

You are right, this is the first time I take shots of this nature, I'm open to listen your advice as anybody else. The previous photos were taken with f5.6 ISO 1000 and the flash was the built in the camera. I'm an airline pilot trying to learn everyday. Anyway thanks for give your opinion.

Actually, it was:

Focal Length: 28.0mm
Aperture: f/5.6
Exposure Time: 0.017 s (1/60)
ISO equiv: 400

You need to make a decision what you want sharp, & what you don't. See the DOF calculator at the bottom of the link in my post & add it to your "pre-flight" checklist:
Depth of field and aperture selection question.
;)

You used a 50D with the 24-105 Canon lens ? This one has IS, so a shutter speed of 1/100 (or 1/60) at focal lengths of 24mm or 28mm should be no problem at all.

On a crop camera like this one f5.6 should work fine for car, been using it for years (on the 5dII it won't do however), so I find it rather troublesome the shots are so soft.

Did you shoot in raw or jpg ? ... had too much coffee before taking these ? :D

Could it be you've lost the 'sharpness edge' when downsizing for online publishing, never go directly from full res to 800px wide but take a few steps getting there, using USM on the way ... select the center AF point only, focus on the headlight or the model next to the car and then re-compose the shot while holding down the shutter button halfway ... bang : sharp shot !

I reduce the size of this shot using the USM technique and I think is not bad.
