I sent my 24L II back to Canon for the third time

1. AF not entirely reliable...especially on non-black and white targets. -17MA needed for all points.
2. Same as above(no improvement)
3. AF not entirely reliable with center point. All other points seem ok with any target. All points require +10MA to be correct except center. Center requires more than +20 when faced with a lower contrast target(black text on a purple box in my test). Center seems to lock on to black text on a white target with +10MA set.

I seriously thought about just saying "close enough" and just never using the center focus point...but come on...its the center focus point. I would say that perhaps its the extra sensitivity focus point that is malfunctioning and not the lens but both my F2.8 lenses work just fine with all points. Hoping for a miracle!

* As another example of a "lower contrast target" I went out to test the lens and tried to shoot the "emergency light" button in my car (red triangle on black/dark grey button). I know that repeated attempts to focus on this all resulted in the same degree of missed focus each time. I believe I was using the center point at the time. Same with black letters on the red door to my apartment. It would miss the target each and every time. Interesting issue.

Sorry to hear that... You probably just got a bad copy all together. It happens, maybe Canon will just replace altogether? It wouldn't hurt to ask. To many beautiful pictures taken with this lens.

 I use that lens so often during complete nights that I imagine you have a bad sample  ... Even if I never shoot with AF near MFD (with any lenses), I really feel 24LII is acurate even for sport to track fast quad bikes like these samples ...

I'm betting those racers would enjoy beating you over the head with your lens for flashing them in the eyes during a dark race. Usually this is strictly banned in these environments.

;) many are friends now (2nd picture is a girl) and usually they are happy to get pictures after the race
It's many years I do that world quad bike race in Pont de Vaux. There is no restriction attached to our accreditations, we can cross tracks and go anywhere we want to go, public is rather fer from the track ..

Sorry to hear that... You probably just got a bad copy all together. It happens, maybe Canon will just replace altogether? It wouldn't hurt to ask. To many beautiful pictures taken with this lens.

Only problem with that theory is that its the third copy I've used of the lens and its the best of the three. Personally I am starting to think it has something to do with my 7D's center AF point diagonal sensitivity points. Why it works with my F2.8 lenses I have no idea. Unfortunately I don't have the 35mm F1.4L lens I use to use with my 50D to test that theory. If it comes back bad again I'll probably take it to a camera store to try on a different body sample. Each time I've sent it in with the body though. How they keep sending it back with minor changes that don't fix the issue I have no idea. I just hope they finally get it right this time.

I realize that my first theory in these situations people post is that the person doesn't know how to use a large aperture lens. I assure you that's not the case as I've used the 35mm F1.4L with good results. I moved to the 24mm for its wider FOV and weather sealing. Here's hoping!

They shipped out my repair yesterday. I'm a little worried because it was accepted just the day before. The previous return it spent a week there before shipping back. At this point I hope they just replace the AF sensor on my 7D. How it keeps coming back needing severe MA...that I have no idea.

Sdiver, there must be something peculiar about this lens or its combination with some bodies. Up to date, I've tested 5 copies with my 5D2. The third one has been the best so far but obviously, since there have been two more copies involved it's not perfect either. There's still some significant amount of random focus. By significant I mean my 35L is noticeably more consistent (almost perfect).
I though that maybe there's something wrong with the body, but while testing the 5th lens I had a chance to try it on another brand new 5D and it behaved even worse than on mine. Then I tried the third copy with the other body and the result was the same.
I'm really confused now. I'm keeping the third copy and have arrangement with the seller (who assisted me in my trials and claimed that there's no such thing as perfect 24LII) that I'll be able to exchange it when I find a perfect one. But will I? I can't believe I could be unlucky five times in a row!!! But in that case how come there are some many reviews praising this lens focusing? Maybe a matter of expectations... I almost never stop down this lens (I bought it for its wide angle and subject separation capabilities) and yes, I do pixel peep when assessing the focus accuracy.

^I haven't had problems with my copy since day one. I've shot with it successfully on my 1Ds III and 7D. I even tried on two 5D MK IIs (my neighbors). No issues. I take it that it's a hit or miss on the body but, then there's the assumption of the lens itself.

why not just bring that "satisfied-enough" copy to Canon sevice center and have them micro adjusted it to your camera?

Now, i am wondering if you are expecting too much in a lens or maybe shooting techniques should be modified to master a new lens.
