Frustrated with 17-55 and Canon service

Here is the linkt to the "lensrentals" article. Guess you can make your own decision based on this. I have also seen other articles (when Google'd) that also recommend against using the 17-55 with the 20D......however none really say why.

Sorry to hear of your problem with the 17-55IS. Mine is a smidge off too. It took +5MA on the 50D and is perfect now, even wide open. It took me about two minutes to achieve amazing sharpness. To bad the 20D doesn't have the capability to do a quick micro focus adjustment. You could always send Canon the lens and camera and tell them to make it work.

I talked to canon again and asked of I should send the body in with the lens. They said that it wouldn't hurt, so I'll be sending in both after easter as I need the body until then. Thank you everyone for the information. I'll post an update after I get it back in a few weeks

if it doesnt come back perfect id start crawling up the chain of command a bit..But be nice..

And start considering a body upgrade, As focus microadjust woulda saved you a lot of money and headaches here

Yup; camera back with the lens is likely the only way they'd be able to recreate the problem. The LensRentals.com folks had a great post about this situation that was linked a little while back.

These sorts of issues are not, generally, entirely the fault of the lens; so if the factory determines that the lens, or body, individually is within spec it can still be your particular combination of hardware. And, therefore, they need to see both items together.
