I used to have the 70 or 75 - 200 and didn't love it. Barely used it. So I sold it.

I'd like another telephoto, but I just don't use them enough to justify anything super pricey. So what's been your experience with this lens? Is the another sort of all purpose tele for under $500 ($300 would be even better) that you'd recommend over this?

These images from 2003 turned out well. The Canon 75-300mm remains a useful lens at a good price, especially for those who have a limited budget. Others will recommend equipment that costs more, but you'll find that even lenses that cost thousands of dollars have their detractors in this forum.

70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM

It's a step up from what you had, and they run around $450 used.

I borrowed my father in laws 75-300 when I needed some extra reach whilst waiting for my 70-200 to arrive. I got photos that I could use, but they lacked clarity, contrast and colours. After some PP they looked a lot better.

For FF or APS-H, get the 70-300 IS.
For APS-C, get the EF-S 55-250 IS.

For throwing at stray cats, get the 75-300.

I was looking at the canon 70-200L variants, the 100-400 dust pump and the 70-300 canon variants ... I am getting the Tamron 70-300 vc seems to be a good combination of price picture quality and focusing speed with vibration compensation

I just asked a similar question here asking between the 70-300 IS USM and the 55-250 IS - I went with the 250 and so far it has been great. With the IS and decent optics (LD glass element) you won't miss those 50mm at all. The 75-300 is not a great lens.

I got my nifty two-fifty for under $200 new, it's on sale at Best Buy this week for $254.99 if you live in the US.

Nice! That reminds me! It was the 55-200 that I had before.

So, how would the 55-250 IS compare the the 70-300 IS? (obviously one costs more, but is the cost that justified, or no?)

Just depends on if $55 is worth it for you to have it brand new or refurb. I had a ton of RewardZone certs and a gift card so I got it from BB for $185 and it was instant gratification ;)
