I love my 70-200mm f4 L...i love how it focuses and its sharpness. What lens could I get to replace my kit lens? I know that most will recommend the 17-55 lens, but that at $1000+ is out of my price range. Any suggestions? This lens would be used mainly as a general purpose/walk around lens.

Do you need IS? If not, checkout Tamron 17-50 f/2.8!

It's still pretty up there in cost, but the 15-85 is the tits. Maybe wait for a used one to pop up on the sale boards to shave $100-$150 off the cost.

Just have to throw it out there. Hear great things about the Tamron, both VC and Non-VC. Also heard some good things about the sigma equivalent.

Haven't checked prices on all these but here would be my choices besides the 17-55:

Canon 15-85
Tamron 17-50 (VC & non VC versions)
Sigma 17-50
Sigma 17-70

Nice thing about the Tamron and Sigma lenses is the constant f/2.8 aperture.

Yep. Didn't mean to include that as a constant f/2.8 though. Here are a couple of reviews on it:

Also I noticed on the eBay link that the seller is located in Surprise, AZ..........

If you don't need IS and want to pay less, Tamron 17-50 non VC, if you want even better IQ and IS, Sigma 17-50 OS.

This is what I'd recommend if you're set on getting a constant f/2.8. If you don't care then the Sigma 17-70 and Canon 15-85 are good choices.
