IMO you're captions are lacking. Have you checked the sports shooter website to see how in depth their captions are?

Good selection now. I would take out "Scrambling away from pressure." or "Keeper for the first." because they look like they might be from the same game.

Are these the captions you are going with?

I thought SS was looking for a caption to look like "Denver Broncos safety Renaldo Hill is tackled by San Diego Chargers offensive tackle Jeromey Clary after intercepting the a pass by Philip Riversin the first quarter of an NFL football game between the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, in Denver. The Chargers won 33-28." (taken from a random AP image link (external link))

instead of "For the tie."

I know that you may not of been keeping track of players and games but that's why captions help the viewer understand the image. I'm not trying to be a prickster with my opinions but I think it's something you should look at to make sure you get in!

I appreciate your feedback, that is what I am wanting.

I find it surprising with all the great images I think I take, when you start looking at them, its hard to find great images.

If nothing else, skip last swimming one. It's snapshot nothing more, and just based on this single image, I would cancel you, if it would be me, who would decide about this. For others they are just not cropped tight enough for me. And putting there photos from 2 sports doesn't really show much. I guess you shoot something else then just football and baseball too, and in general every editor looks for diversity, not 100 photos from one match.
I don't know how SS "editors" look at this selection (in my mind anyone with sponsor is accepted, no matter what crap he shows), but I look at this from my point of view (as owner of photo agency who gets quite few requests every day), and this is basically view of every editor who gets request for job from new guy... and in my mind, SS "editors" should look at this same way.... applying for membership on SS should be kinda same as applying for job.
Anyway... to make things short... I look for diversity with those guys who send requests. Someone can be great shooting football, but suck at everything else, and that's not enough for me. You have to do good with all sports. So when applying for job (or SS membership in your case) show this. Pick THE BEST photo or two you every took, put it there, and then do same for another 5 or 6 sports, and here you go... you just got 10 killer photos, which they can't cancel.
And two more thing... First, don't exaggerate with PS. Some photos looked soft and then extremely sharpened. Drop them. And second... baseball photos don't show much of action for me. Sure I was never shooting baseball (baseball doesn't even exists as sport over here), but I did see quite few baseball photos, and yours just don't look like action photos for me. Might be just wrong timing or wrong angle, but personally I don't like them.

IMO you have good shots in the 11 you posted, but not enough variety, you have 7 FB pics, 1 swimming, 1 SB, 2 BB. All the FB shots look the same a running play, baseball and softball shots are shots of a slide to second or home, there are more things that go into a game and sports shooters will take shots that are not action as long as they are good and tell a story.
What you have as captions you can use as titles, as mentioned already caption needs to be informative. Here is a link to AP style captioning.

Thanks, best article I have ever read on captions, funny they use my caption as what NOT to use. :)
I am not saying its an excuse, but shot my first sport last October so do not have a lot of sports to use. My basketball photos showed the crowd and seemed to be too busy of a background. I plan on shooting some track photos and will look at some of my non action shots also.
I make my living shooting portraits and weddings but sports is my passion.

Since I make my living shooting portraits, I do always shoot a few portraits while I am there, but did not think its what SS was looking for. I also have a few celebrations but lighting is bad IMHO
Thanks to all who reply, I know I am extremely new at sports and wanting to learn, that is why I want to eventually make it to sports shooters.

I think that you have done a great job. To me, the difference between good and great is the story. Anyone (not really) can stop action with good equipment. Although that is part of what you do, photojournalism is where it is at. You first and second shot have that, the swimmer is simply stopped action, no story. As I work on my own stuff, I worry less about the technical and more about composition.

Look at the whites in some of your pics, they look burnt out to me. How were your histograms? Did you post process? Your last football celebration in addition to light looks heavily processed. It to me is also an example of what not to do. Two backs showing nothing and the player in the middle without facial expression. The ideal celebration pictures fulfills the old wide world of sports adage, "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat."

Hope that helps.

No matter what the shot I think you have to show the facial expression. I read a comment about taking sports photos somewhere. The person was attempting to convey sports shooting, positon etc, he remarked "No body wants an image of the number on the rear of jersey as he scores the touchdown" I have tried to keep that in mind when I am trying to tell the game story. As much as it might mean to a series of photos, the player gets the ball runs past the defense, at a point where you can no longer see the expression on the players face it may still tell the game story. It would tell the story better if you could see the player's facial expression. I have shots I take, and when I chimp them, and say to my self "Man you dun good that is a keeper", when I actually have a chance to do some editing the player's eyes are closed. So it may be a keeper as far as telling the game story, capturing the facial expressions of the player or players makes it "You nailed that one", "That is a the keeper photo of the shoot" etc. makes the image cover quality.
Good luck on your submission, please update to let us know the results.

I heard this, too, but the ironic thing about this is there are times when those sort of shots are ran in major paper. So it seems to be is it telling the story the that editor wants at that time.
