Both are very nice captures. Yes, the focus was off just a bit in the second one. Think about the composition a bit too. Try and remove anything that's not important. In the case of the heron I'd leave just enough water to give the shot context but get rid of most of the rest. For the first shot I'd chop off that round bouy or whatever it is on the right. The sun is the focal point here and that big black spot is a bit distracting.

I like the second one. In the first one put me in the camp of sunsets needing to be in color. Also in the first shot your horizon line is pretty much in the center. If you had cropped part of the water its a stronger composition.

I like the sun/reflection on the 3rds in the 1st one. However the sun is totally blown out (as you would expect) and that really puts me off it.
