Got a Mola Demi? Would you do me a small favor?

Late to the party, but here's my contribution of a test shot. Mola Demi + BXRi 250, chimera ring, PAD diffuser stacked with Opal Glass diffuser.

Okay I took the PAD out of Sheldon N's setup because I'm using the satin Glass Dome on my Elinchrom light and then have the opal in front of it.

Wow...that pretty much solidified me now choosing the Demi over the Speedo BD. I've owned the Speedo BD before (have since given it to my assistant), but I'm now lusting after a beauty dish again, and the concentric circles of the speedo vs the lack of concentric circles in the Mola are what's pushing me to go mola.

Thanks for posting this.

Not that it matters, but I put the PAD right up against the opal glass just before the rubber friction rings, rather than in between the stand-offs.

Only mention it as it gives a bit more space for the modelling lamp and therefore lets you get the deflectors closer to the flashtube which is usually a good thing.

As Jeff said, thanks much for posting this image, Sheldon. I'm truly surprised that the Mola is 100% ring free.

I'm completely surprised considering that the Speedotron is supposed to be the most like the Mola....... supposedly.

Think you might switch over to the Demi, Rob? Both the Demi and Jerry K's BD throw a *much* smoother pattern than our Speedotrons. As I've mentioned before, I've never actually seen the ring from the Speedotron in an image of a real subject but suddenly I'm overcome with ringlessness envy :(

I've been thinking about this for a long time, Dave. I'm quite taken by the Setti and have a feeling I may skip the Demi and go right to the Setti. It's not at the top of my list but something that is on the table, as it were.

I've used the Demi for a number of years - starting with Eli and then Profoto, usually with (Speedo grid is my STRONG rec) grid and has been one of my best purchases. Once do a switch over to Nikon, a Setti or Euro is on list.

I sold SheldonN my Opal glass as do a lot of work with animals (w & w/o people) and liked the extra center snap from the PAD. Also prefer it (both dish and PAD) for location work. While Walter Melroe (Mola founder) considers Opal the best unit with his dishes from technical perspective, PAD was developed as default unit after complaints from location photogs due to broken Opals.

As you've seen very smooth output - only see 'ring's from sloped terraces in dish in catchlights.

Also can't recommend the company enough - GREAT service.

Mola is even MORE expensive down here, it's beyond believable. I'll have a Kacey set up in the next few weeks and if all goes well with my business, I'll be looking at the 45" Kacey dish sometime in the future.

Mola has changed the way the opal glass is mounted and it's kind of a shock absorber rubber pad on the back side at the end of the shaft and no longer a hole with the allen bolt sticking through. Also I bought the extra support ring which steadies the whole setup.
