I have a 682B, with the useless 3 legs at the bottom. And the 3229 Head. Works well.

Another vote for the 681 here, attached straight to the lens collar.

I use an Induro CM24. Great CF monopod, worth every cent. http://www.indurogear.com/products_details_CM24.html (external link)
I use the collars on the 300mm f/2.8 and 400mm f/2.8 on the monopod, and it works beautifully. I rarely use it with anything shorter than a 300mm.

I use the Gitz 5561T. Supports 55lbs. You can pole vault with that thing.

I use the Induro AM25 with PHQ Head and QR plates. I love the Induro products. I have the tripod too and they are very light, compact, strong and stable. Very good value.

Calumet 8x Carbon Fiber

I used a Manfrotto 681 monopod for a long while until I needed to fly to China. The problem with the 681(series) is that it doesn't retract short enough to fit in my check-on suitcase and security will most often not allow a monopod to be carried aboard an airliner since it may be considered a "weaponlike" object.

I now use a Calumet 8103 4-section, 8x Carbon Tripod which folds shorter yet is about as tall extended and can support about the same weight. It is twice as expensive but, is a bit lighter in weight.

I NEVER USE A BALL HEAD - instead, I use a KIRK MPA-1 swivel which is a Manfrotto Monopod Swivel with a Kirk Arca Compatible Quick Release. Using that system with a RRS L-plate on my camera makes for a very solid hold. The L-plate on the swivel keeps the camera over the monopod instead of hanging over to the side as on a ball head when in the portrait position. With a tripod ring lens, this is not a problem but, I also use my monopod for lenses which don't have a tripod ring. RRS sells two versions of a swivel head, which are medium capacity and high capacity models.

Regarding the use of a tripod for sports, despite what is stated by one poster above, I use a monopod for long lens when shooting field sports. I shoot with a 300mm f/4L IS lens on a 1.6x camera on a pod and a 70-200mm f/4L IS lens, on a strap which I use hand held with a second camera. This is the poor man's version of the two 1D cameras + 400mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lenses used in this very informative video by Scott Sewell...

I use a manfrotto 682b and have considered beating afew people over the head with the end of it,mainly the people that try to rob me,so I usually carry a S.W.A.T. knife, the monopod, and a pair of handcuffs with all my gear incase **** hits the fan.2 more years until I can get a 9mm P30L.

Gitzo 2561T with a Kirk MPA-1 Quick Release & Manfrotto 234 Swivel head. My hands are unfortunately not that stable so I use this most of the time.

Do y'all realize that cojones78 just reactivated a thread that had been dead for four years and everybody else chimed in like it was a new thread? :p
