I bit the bullet and went to the local computer recycle place and found a beat up boot only Inspiron designed for XP with a Firewire port for $79. Had a copy of XP from the last retail sale for my previous computer and the EOS disk from my 40D, found the 1DII driver at Canon loaded em all up and all is well. I would have spent at least that much trying to find a work around... Scott

It's good, no idea on the tech side of making it work I just used a Mac with unknown OS (I know nothing about apple unless it's an iPhone lol) and FireWire to get into it, I got win7 64bit so I had the same drama as you, I suggest find someone with an XP MACHINE or a Mac. Thanks and thanks everyone else for the input. I know someone with a Macbook Pro, but they have a Firewire 800. I do have a cable (another one, a 9-4 pin) so hopefully that is not an issue. I think he might have the EOS Utility that came with the 7D. I'll find out next week. If I can get it to work, I will just turn on every single P.Fn to something other than the default, then hopefully I won't ever have to connect the camera to a computer again. Ds
