24-105 IS noise

not sure if this is normal or not.... when IS is off, this lens is silent

but when IS is turned on, i can hear a noise coming from inside the lens, which im not sure is completely normal. i dont have a recording, but if i had to guess, it sounds like something rolling/spinning (ie. a tiny gear on an axle), followed by a sudden TZZZ sound, at which point the "rolling/spinning" noise ceases.

nothing is wrong with the lens mechanically, and it produces great IQ as advertised

Is this your first lens with IS? A lot of people mention the noise the IS unit makes in the 70-200 lens, but it's perfectly normal for some lenses to make a noise when the IS unit is whirring. I don't own a 24-105, but my 70-200 does make a noise whereas my 17-55 is pretty much silent.

Normal, enjoy your great new lens, had mine 2 months now. Superb lens

Very normal, some people report the image in the view finder shifting when IS kicks in also, that is normal.

should've gotten a 24-70, mine doesn't make any kind of sound (joking of course)

I was surprised how the IS sound, too when I bought first lens with IS... but now I had a lot of lenses with IS and this is completely normal...

I had a thread about the exact same thing. I had the lens for a while before I used it in a place that was dead silent and heard the same thing. I didn't remember ever hearing it before so it freaked me out a little bit, but as you have found out it's completely normal!

I can hear the IS noise from mine only if I literally put my ear to the lens, otherwise it's impossible to hear it.

Compared to my 70-200 f/4 IS the 24-105 is silent!


But yes, you will hear a slight whirring noise from this lens.

i can only hear the whirring inside if i put the lens to my ear.... not really a factor in regular shooting. however, i can still hear the tsszzz sound when the IS stops moving, even when im simply holding the camera in my hands and blindly focusing.

cant say enough about how happy i am with this lens otherwise
