I was shooting skateboarding today with my new 24-70 2.8L and everything was going fine, but I started to realize after a while that every time I was shooting portrait style the camera had AF issues, like I'd press the button and nothing, I'd try half pressing 4 or 5 times on the subject before I pressed fully, and I'd see the red box, but no click, no picture, but it was fine shooting landscape. I was shooting AI servo with center point focus. I know it wasn't the lens because I also tried my 70-200 f/4 and again, fine in landscape, horrible in portrait. I'd say one in every 5 shutter presses actually took a photo.

Any ideas? Camera is not gripped.

Are you using a genuine canon battery?

I had the same problem with a 'Jessops' battery in my 30D, worked ok in landscape, but would play up when using the camera in portrait position, every so often the shutter would not fire.

All my batteries are now Canon and I have had no problem.

I am using the stock battery as far as I know, the camera was used, but I have noticed that the battery level indicator always shows full even when the battery's at 25%. And someone said it's likely a battery issue as opposed to the Camera, so maybe all my problems could be solved with a new battery? Too bad they're like $130..

Shouldn't be more than about $40 for a genuine BP-511A battery.

I used to buy Canon batteries for my 1ds until dude at the camera store told me that the Lenmar batteries are just as good for 1/2 the price and how everyone loves them. I was about to buy the Canon brand and he talked me out of it. The Lenmar are about $50, as opposed to $110 and are absolutely as good as the Canon brand. I bought one and used it for a few months and went back and bought another, they are awesome!

Well keep in mind I'm in Canada so take your prices, double them, add 10% tax, and then double them again -_-

Looks like the price doubles once you get into Canada from all of the american retailers..Might be worth it to just use B&H since they have relatively cheap shipping, but customs takes forever.

Back up a minute there - battery orientation can affect AF performance???
Anyone have any plausible theory about how this would be possible?

Battery controls everything electrionic, AF is controlled by electronics. I know with paintball if we're having weird issues like air flow we always change the battery because it effects the solenoid, so even though things don't seem like they're directly related they can still effect each other.

Gravity and inertia influencing quality of electrical contact.

Can you develop that into a theory that affects AF but not other functions?

I would assume that the AF operation requires the most power because it has to actually power a small motor to move the lens elements. If the power was spotty or weak, maybe the AF motor isn't turning like it should.

In theory it should be all or nothing, but I am only trying to speculate the plausible. I'd probably start with a $5 ebay battery, though, before dropping a ton on a battery that might not be the problem.
