Hahaha! I am at work and almost bursted in laughter. Sometimes I sit on my pelican cases filed with L lenses and wished that I should have just bought a luxury car. Lol!

By the way, we should have another potn meetup.

Finally brought out the LOVELY 50L for a quick street test. I was on my dinner break from work and I decided to walk to McDonalds for Dinner (How healthy ;) ). Anyways, I took out the 50L and mounted it on the 5D to snap some shots.

I still have to take another 2000 photos to get used to the lens. I've only take 30 shots with it thus far - so far i am starting to fall in love with the look.

Great set CitizenMinistry!
I like yous too toshiro7. Very nice PP.

50L seems to be an "acquired taste", like a gourmet thing. :) One needs to use it for a while to really appreciate it.

Soft / Calibration ?

Hey guys - how is your 50L from f1.2 to f1.8 ? Mine is pretty soft :(

Its not until f/2.0 that it starts to get acceptable, and f2.5 where I really like the sharpness - but I didn't get this lens to shoot at f2.5, ya know...

I think I'm going to send it into Canon for calibration and see what happens.

I see some images here said to be shot wide open and they are tact sharp - makes me jealous, lol...

thoughts?

EDIT: - I did many focus test and dialed in good (no front/back) focus at -13 MA. Its not a back/front focus issue. Its just flat out soft :(

Mine is pretty soft wide open but at 1.6 it gets pretty sharp. I thought too about sending mine is, I assume since its under warranty for 1 year Canon will calibrate it for free?

Here is a shot at 1.6 with minimal sharpening, IMO this is very good sharpness at 1.6.

^ yes, its free.

Ok, i'm sending mine in... mine at f1.2 is completely unusabe... f1.4 isn't much better.

1.6 still isn't impressive and at 1.8 it seems I get keepers, and some non-keepers.

2.0 starts to get more consistent, and 2.2/2.5 is fine.

Nothing like my 85L though, which I can shoot wide open (f1.2) all day long, and its tact sharp.

Welp - hopefully Canon can work some magic for me. It seems like this softness is just an inhearent issue with this lens.

cant see image (stupid work websense blocks it).

For me, I can manage to get SOME keepers at f1.6... and 1.8 is a 50/50 toss-up. like i said, its not till 2.0/2.2 that i feel confident. below 2.0, i have little confidence and trust :(

I rarely get a good shot at 1.2 most are pretty soft and like you its not that I am missing focus its just that nothing is really sharp but sometimes I get pretty acceptable to good sharpness so I really don't know, I guess mine is fine. at 1.6 I get really good results.

Here are a few of my best at 1.2, all with minimal sharpening.

I sent mine to Canon. They insisted on adjusting the focusing-system in the camera. So before I sent it in I had to MA -10 with this lens. And now, since getting it back, every other lens I have, like the 135L for example, has to be adjusted MA +10.

But before I sent it in I had a chat with a techie and he explained that plane of focus changes at different apertures. So this is true. I thought it was a myth.

So to work with this lens it seems like you have to be at a distance so you have adequate depth of field and don't change the aperture since plane of focus will be different...

My 50/1.4 USM was more consistent and sharper.
