I'm intrigued that there are so many Spitfires flying all over the world. Are these re-furbished originals or modern replicas?

I never realised that there were so many Spitfires still in existence all over the world.

You would have enjoyed last years September Duxford display then, they had more Spitfires then I've ever seen in one place before..

Sadly they are all American made Spitfires, the last three British made burned up in a hangar fire about twelve years ago. I'd like to thank everyone for the great pics, it's like airplane porn. Lol

I don't think that's quite right. I've just looked at Wikipedia and it states that there 44 originals still around, and I'm there there are some in this country that still fly.

As far as I can recall, and I did a bit of research today, every Spitfire ever made was in the UK

That was certainly my understanding - but I'm certainly no expert.

I am looking forward to "Legends of the Sky" at Duxford this coming 9th and 10th July. I attended the event last year and was over whelmed by the Spits flying over those two days, hence the return visit this year.

I wonder if the UK/US production is being confused by the power plants? There are very few aircraft running Rolls-Royce built V-1650 'Merlins' any more - most surviving 1650's are US Packard built. I wasn't aware of any US build Spits.

I spend too much on flying to have much equipment worth listing!

Where the US engines as powerful as the RR engines?
