how do I tell its the newer XSi ? by the 18-55 IS lens ?

Thats not an XSi, the XSi has 12.2MP, not 10.1. The XTi has 10.1MP.

Good eye Sirrith!

If I were you I would look for an XSi in the classifieds here. Look for an established member and don't pay with paypal GIFT and you should be fine.

It goes way beyond the lens OP. The XSi has a different/better sensor than the XTi, and has higher ISO capability. The lens is also different in that the kit lens that came with the XTi was the non-IS version, and is inferior in comparison to the IS version of the kit lens that comes with the XSi.

Not sure where the listing you posted is from, but in the absence of a picture of the kit for sale, you should pass. I agree you should look for an XSi.

Cheers Stump :)

The 450D (XSi) has a few significant upgrades from the 400D (XTi) e.g. a larger screen and live view (quite important in some situations), so nowadays, it makes more sense to buy the 450D considering it doesn't cost much more than the 400D at all.

You can tell what camera it is by asking the seller for some pictures, and it'll say what model it is on the body. As for the lens, make sure if you're getting one with an 18-55, that its the IS model, which it should be because thats the lens which comes with the 450D, and its much better than the older, non-IS model.

If you are expecting to stick with the kit lens for a while then do be sure to get the IS version of the 18-55. Aside from the obvious improvement of having IS, it offers overall improved image quality compared to the original 18-55 non-IS kit lens.

thanks for the awesome info guys
Does the 18-55 kit lens say "IS" on it somewhere ?

I just spoke to the guy and it is in fact a 450D / 12.2 MP
he says its about year and half old.
I'll be going looking at it later today...anything I should pay paticular attention to ?

Yes, it will have the words Image Stabilizer. There are also some cosmetic differences as you can see below.
