Perhaps my expectations are too high. All the photos I see in the magazines are with better cameras and lenses. I don't know what you shoot, but magazine photos are often taken with co-operative and stationary subjects, with carefuly-arranged lighting. 5D2, 24-105L, 85mm f/1.8, MP960, HG21, crumbling G6+R72, Brownian toddler

I lust after a 135L myself, but lots of portrait shooters use a 70-200 for flexibility from head shots to groups. 5D2, 24-105L, 85mm f/1.8, MP960, HG21, crumbling G6+R72, Brownian toddler

This allows a thinner DOF and better subject isolation. -Chris

Soft-focus may or may not be your thing, and it's hard to exactly duplicate the optical effect in Photoshop, but used as a standard prime lens, it's very good. The one I owned was quite sharp down to max aperture. It's a pretty old lens design (may be the oldest Canon lens in production, I'm not sure), and is the longest non-L prime Canon has ever made. I enjoyed using it while I had it. It can't compare to the 135L, no doubt. But neither can the price tag.
