....so what are your thoughts on using a rechargeable battery that is not a Canon battery? Is using a Rayovac battery alright to use as a 2nd backup battery?
Thanks

When I bought my 40D 3 years ago I bought a non canon battery as well. I've been alternating between it and the original canon battery since day one and never had an issue with it. Would never know which battery is in the camera at any given time, they seem to work just the same.

I've no idea which brand it is but will post back when I get a chance to have a look.

Many (i would also say most) use 3rd party batteries as part of their primary rotation, myself included. No idea what brand mine are, but some 3rd party batteries I have read people get better results than canon. So there is no issue in picking up 3rd party batteries as a spare.

I have some 3d party that I got with my camera grip. The problem with it is when you put it in the camera body it tends to be to large, and it gets jammed in there.

Sterling batteries get my vote. The one for my 50d has more capacity than the original Canon one.

I picked up a Lenmar battery for my 1DII because a Canon one would have cost over $100, and this only cost me $30. No troubles at all with it, and it holds its charge for quite a long time.

How long do they last in the flash unit when fully charged?

A long time, as long as 2400-2500Mah batteries from other brands. Eneloops are a different mixture for the battery that doesn't discharge over time like traditional Ni-MH batteries (they hold a viable charge for about 2 years after being fully charged) and they also discharge more efficiently and rapidly, refilling the flash capacitors more quickly and allowing you to get more shots off. Doubly important with E-TTL flashes as they all fire twice for every picture.

Except for the original Canon batteries that came with the original 10D's and 5D's package, all my batteries are off brand and work fine! Savings ... Priceless!!!
7D and 5DMKII, Canon battery that came with the cameras and bought an extra with each camera. Haven't needed any others for them yet.

I've been using a Sterlingtek BP-511A along with the OEM Canon BP-511A in my 40D since I first bought it. I will probably steer clear of anything other than Canon brand LP-E4's for the 1D3 though. the Sterlingtek has been rock solid and reliable in the 40D though.
