I know its been a week since you posted this. looking through this thread, trying to decide either keep my siggy or get this. siggy is goin back to bh for a new copy. ill give it one more try. now i know the 50L has its issues...at least the copy i rented did. just wonder if they are more/less tolerable.

as for your shots. love the composition but one thing i have learned shooting weddings...keep the details in the dress! do what it takes to give the highlights in the dress priority. you can always make up for underexposed images as long as the dress is retained. of course if you can use flash to balance when out in the sun like that. but better to up the under exposure and battle noise than to not have any detail in that dress. she spent a lot of money on it...let her see it.

your other images were nice. love the one of her looking out over the water.

At the DoF he's shooting at though, I don't think even underexposure could have saved the details in her dress. :D But what you say makes sense. Wedding dresses are silly expensive... for a dress you wear only once. What's up with that? ;)

Still better than a completely blown white-out! believe me, i know its tough to keep it white, with detail in bright sun with large apertures. im getting better at it using just natural light. so either take the time to set up proper lighting, get an ND filter or spend time in the digital darkroom making corrections. Im considering an ND filter to shoot 1.4 or 1.8 in direct sun. thats the thing about weddings and locations. many are outdoor and the bride and groom want specific spots...usually right out in the sun!

but that aside...i like the shots. captured some nice moments there.

I bought a B+W 3-stop ND filter so I can shoot wide open outdoors with the 50. Works well, IMO.

i was considering a two stop ND. at 1.8 iso 50 i peg out at 1/8000 and barely scrape out all the detail in the dress. two stop ND will get me back to iso 100 (better dynamic range) and 1/4000 in bright sunlight.

Awesome pic, I would have chosen a different composition though.

I would have chosen a different lens completely. Probably an 800. :D

I went camping last weekend, and underestimated just how cold it would get in the Shenandoah mountains... let's just say my 55 degree sleeping bag didn't do well in the low-40 temps. After a frigid night, I had to get my body warm again, so I made some coffee and enjoyed the golden hour light.

And a random Aston Martin (this wasn't taken at a camp site, FYI :)), but it exhibits that 50L look. This lens is majestic, I love it more than my 85L:
