the 17-55 is a relatively older lens when you look at the 15-85, its just a design choice but my guess is Canon wants to re-design their levels and have silver ring on EF-S be a high quality lens. there are plenty of crappy lenses with the USM ring so the golden USM ring doesn't mean mid-range lens

Yeah, your probably right. Nothing to worry about then.

Im really loving my 15-85. I posted before that i wasn't sure if mine was a good one or not, i would say its god enough for a mid priced lens.
Ive done with the pixel peeping and it seems like its going to be a great 17-55IS replacement, especially considering the relatively low cost.

A quick question.
Is anyone using this lens for video, specifically with a 60D?

I shot one piece of footage with mine and it looked horrible. Very jagged. This could have been the scene and the fact that i was panning but its not something ive seen with my 17-55IS, panning or not.

I don't routinely shoot video with my 7D at all, but the few times I have done I used the 15-85 and the results were fine. None of the problems you describe.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

Ive not posted for a while so here are a few from me.
Ive now sold my 17-55IS f/2.8 and decided to keep the 15-85. Not sure if i have a perfect copy but it looks good to me.

Slight vertical distortion you should easily be able to correct in something like PS. But nice picture.

The left-most tower (the one with the flag) seems to be leaning to the left a little. Otherwise it's pretty well spot-on.
