Use a smaller memory card. I use a 512MB card to do my firmware flashes. Put the firmware file in the root of the flash card.

I copy the .FIR file direct to the card with a card reader, pop the card in the camera and follow the menu prompts in the camera. I've never had an issue flashing firmware to any of my cameras with those cards.
