I've been away working on a motorsport event this last weekend.

Had the camera set up on the tripod and was triggering it by wireless remote. All was gong well:

After that session was completed, it was time for a late breakfast, so the camera was removed (thankfully) and the Manfrotto put safely to one side:

A session or two later, I had a competitor break down in front of me. Unusually (perhaps because I was at a remote location) I was asked over the radio to recover the vehicle away from the stage. Dutifully I obliged... yep, I drove over the tripod:

Oops

Two of the legs are bent, and the one hinge bracket has snapped - thankfully the head is undamaged.

I'll be buying the same model again, but will get a bag for it this time (and use it).

Good tip. :p

Seriously though, look into quoting parts replacement. You never know if it may be repairable with just replacing the legs if everything else works. Could be cheaper than buying new. ;)

Having had a look at it this morning, you make a valid point - I only need 2 new leg assemblies (the broken bit is part of the leg).

As a bit of extra interest, this is the kind of image I was capturing off the tripod:

although I think I was definately getting a better image hand-held:

I'll post some more in "Motorsport" later for those interested.

Better that they were only tripod legs and not someone's legs. ;)

Good captures too!

I got this parts list from Manfrotto's CSR for the 055XPROB, just to give you an idea:

Thank you all for the synpathetic comments.

Thanks also Blurr for that parts list - I'll contact my vendor (Jessops, UK) and also Manfrotto direct.

I've taken the legs apart tonight - only need a 4mm hex key:

Sorry for the blurred photo - my tripod is broken !

it only took a few minutes and should be easy enough to put back together. I thought perhaps that the above would be interesting to other Manfrotto users who were inquisitive

I was more anoyed with myself than angry - hopefully others will have learnt a lesson from this tale of woe (I know I have).

Oh, by the way, it was a cracking two days motorsport, with the top 2 contenders fighting all the way to the end of the 14th stage. In the end, the crew who were leading won it as the then No2 crew broke his transmission within half a mile of the finish on the very last stage. It was also humbling to see the winner slow down as they reached the stricken crew, to ensure they were ok, before powereing on to the finish line - excellent sportmanship.

And yes, motorsport is dangerous - my tripod legs can be replaced.

No sympathy from me :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Just read your other thread re damage and I went and admitted to reversing over my tripod! Had to come here to see how it was damaged , same thing.

Ok , you don't leave your tripod propped against your car wheels and I won't unpack my car and place my tripod , in black bag on dark grass behind my car.

I say you just have to laugh. Anytime you run over something and it's not a person that's a good day.

I must have driven over my tripod much more carefully.
15 or so years later it still has an obvious reminder of a rough childhood:

Gotta agree, the handheld panning shot is much better than the tripod shot :)

Don't knock it. It may not be the best out there but this is the same combo I've been using for 3 years. Has done me pretty good. 'cept I lost the rubber feet in some mud loooooooooog ago! haha
