What set up are you using to mount the filters? I would assume your ND is a square style filter in a Lee/Cokin type of holder so that would go on last, the filter holder would screw onto the CPL. There shouldn't be any optical difference in the order you mount them.

You raise a very good point there, just got to make sure not to turn the CPL while screwing the ND on ;).

No need for ND filter if shooting at the right time of day.. Like I said, shoot earlier in the day or later in the day when it's not so bright and a CPL works fine. I haven't done a rig shot but it's the same thing for still photos if you're trying to achieve a certain shutter speed.
