Haven't posted in a while on here. Figured I'd start to reinvolve myself here on the forum.

OK! SO I'm pretty excited to introduce to you guys my series that I have been sitting on for SEVEN months! I am insanely proud of this entire series and the work that our team put into shooting these.

I guess I will start with a little back story before I jump right in. Last summer, I came across a thread on this forum with a series of photos by a Portland based photographer named Jimmy Hickey (external link). If you checked out the thread you will see that the series was of senior standouts (senior superlatives, whatever you want to call them hahaha. The photos that go into the yearbook for the senior class) that he shot for his high school. I was INSANELY inspired by these and knew right that instant that I wanted to do the same for my senior class. In previous years, the senior standouts (I'm just going to call the SS from here on in haha) had been shot by a local studio on a white background using the corniest props ever, blah blah blah. I was determined that my senior class would have awesome SS photos. So with that in mind, we assembled a team of photographers to get the photos done. The team consisted of myself, Stephen Alfon (he never updates his Flickr (external link), Cody Hanson (external link), Robert Torres, and Chloe Heath (has a pretty dope 365 project going and is a good friend. Go scope her work!) (external link). Anyways, we got together for like 3 straight weeks before the day of the shoot to make sure that every single idea was 100% planned out and ready to rock on the day of the shoot. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, we had to shoot all 21 categories on ONE day haha. Nerve racking. So anyways, with our plans all ready to rumble, and the gear of like 7 photographers borrowed, we were ready to go!

Anyways, now for the photos

Chaparral MVP: Xiang

This is probably one of my favorite from the series. Xiang is absolutely gorgeous and a BOSS athlete. She led the varsity cross country team and ran varsity track for long distance. She is another person that is a good friend and I shoot with often. Cool beans.

Chaparral MVP: Antoine

This category is for the two top athletes at our school (duh). This is Antoine Arnold, star wide receiver of the Chaparral Puma football team. Guy is frickin 6'3" but is as quick as someone half that size. He is the ranked nationally as number 39 at his position.

Most Likely to Be Found on the Cover of Vogue

This was definitely one of my favorite photos of the day. We borrowed a red carpet from another high school in our area and then I had the idea of having a bunch of people come from the photography class at our school to make it look like they were being attacked by the paparazzi while coming to some red carpet premier.

Most Outspoken

This was one of the more difficult shoots of the day. The girl in the photo wasn't working with Cody and Stephen and was making things hard to accomplish. In the end though, I am pretty happy on what came out of the shoot. Our original idea involved the librarian in between the two shushing them but we decided to switch it up and use this cool lookin hallway.

Biggest Bookworms

For this one, the other team of photographers (we split our team up into two teams) did a frickin great job on accomplishing it. Andy is a total math wiz so he really wanted to have his calculus book in the photo and Nina is one of the biggest Harry Potter fans EVER so she is holding all the Harry Potter books in chronological order.

Most Unpredictable

For this one, we wanted to really show case the complete unpredictablness (making up words like a boss) of the two in the photo. So I came up with the idea of shooting a composite photo where the subjects would be doing a bunch of different random crap hahah.

Most Talented

Do you ever get to a shoot and everything that you planned on doing just works? That was EXACTLY how this shoot worked out. Our team had planned out lighting diagrams for all of the shoots and the majority of them only sort of worked out. However, this one worked out PERFECTLY and the shoot turned out great. Brian is a boss painter/drawer/guy/minotaur and Saya is an absolutely AMAZING pianist and singer.

Social Butterfly

These two are both ridiculously fun people to be around. Lauren is a very good friend of mine and Jason is my neighbor. We wanted to create a photo where it looked like these two were in HIGH demand by all their adoring friends.

Most Inspiring

This category was for the people that were most inspiring. Fittingly enough, you are looking at the current Valedictorian (Samaira, on the left) and Salutatorian (Cory, on the right) of Chaparral High School. This was another photo that ended up working out exactly like we had planned. We wanted to make it seem like they were giving some inspiring speech the the people in the crowd.

this category was for the two people that were voted Most Changed. The idea behind the photo was to have them look at our freshman year yearbook and be like, WTF?!

Most Likely to Be Found in a Sandbox

This category was basically to show the people that were the biggest kids at heart. We brought out the stuffed animals, gameboys and playground equipment and went to work.

Best Wheels

This category is for the people who had the most fly mode of transportation to get to school with. Sterling drives a CLASSIC VW Bug and and Molly here rides a bike. It was completely unplanned that their rides matched up so perfectly but it definitely made for a sweet photo. This was the only photo that we didn't shoot on the campus of our school and we only had like 5 minutes to shoot it (mall security guards aren't too keen on having people shooting photos in parking garages).

Best to Take Home to Your Parents

This was the category for best to take home to parents. The concept here was to recreate that awkward first meeting when you bring the person that you are dating home to your parents. Of course, both the winners are Mormons hahahaha.

Best Laugh

This was definitely the funniest shoot of the day. We basically stood there and laughed nonstop the ENTIRE time hahaha. Sodas came out of noses (actually just my nose hahah), laughter tears were shed, good times. The idea here was to create a scene where two people sit in a Cafe and laugh over some casual conversation hahaha.

Best Excuse Maker

For this shot, we wanted to do something where the principal of our school was sitting their yelling at the students and they would just be sitting there trying to weasel their way out of whatever they were in trouble for but the principal pulled out LITERALLY the day before the shoot so we had to improvise and make something else happen. This idea came to us literally during the appointment that we had to shoot the photos (all the appointments were a little bit more than 30 minutes so there was pretty much no time to mess up). We were trying to make it seem like they were just rolling in to class all late, and the campus supervisor (Kathy is a BOSS) is chasing them while they are trying to get to class.

Worker Bees

This one was to show the hardest academic workers at the school. Johnathan (the guy on the right) plays three varsity sports, maintains a GPA WAAAAY over 4.0, head engineer of ASB, Peer Leader president and the list goes on. All his hard work paid off though as he is going to be a Harvard man starting in the fall.

Best Hair

Duh, best hair. There was some controversy for this shoot as the yearbook staff changed some stuff at the last minute and the person that was supposed to win got it taken away and then the runner up had cut their hair.... Whatevers. We wanted to go for a diva look in front of the lighted mirror.

Best Smile

This is a pretty obvious one hahah. Luckily for us, it was Random Act of Kindness Week at our campus so there were tons and tons of little smiley face cutouts all over campus. Convenient.

Epitome of a Puma: Most Spirited

This one was a little bit more difficult. The other team had a hard time working with Dillon to get the photo that we were trying to accomplish. The actual winner of this award was Los Barbos and the girl in the photo, Sydney, but Los Barbos consisted of like 17 people so that was out of the question (for those who don't know, Los Barbos is a team of friends who basically swept intramural sports this year. They won dodgeball, volleyball, senior dodgeball, and senior futsal.

You guys did a fantastic job. Yearbooks have really changed since I was in high school. You'll be proud of these even years from now. Good work.

Well done.

I like the way you have treated the Senior Genre here.

Very good to supply some context for the pics.

A lof of the senior stuff on POTN seems to be "make me look like a model" type shots. Maybe its time for that to change?

This is imaginative and different, well done.

It has given me a few ideas as well...

These aren't senior portraits, though. That's why they're so different.

Forgive my English lack of understanding. :-)

But maybe they should be?

Or a more subtle version of the above etc.

I think I know what you're saying. I also like the senior portraits that provide a little glimpse into who the person is, rather than just quasi-glamour shots. Although those have their place, too.
