Looking for advice on which wide angle zoom is best on a budget.
I cannot afford an L at the moment so looking at
Sigma 24-60 f/2.8 or a 17-50.
or the Tamron 17-50 just scared might get a bad copy.
Need/want fast ie 2.8.
would appreciate help as some are crop only.

I have the 24-60 f/2.8 and it suffers from zoom creep, but it's not bad. Not had much chance to use it lately, I'll see if I can dig out some photos (have only used it for some snap shots while out walking the dogs so nothing especially great), just need to find where I put the photos on my computer!

Camera: Canon EOS 1D MkII
Lenses: Canon 50mm f/1.8 II, Canon 50mm f/2.5 Macro, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L,
Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG, Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO HSM Telemacro, Tamron SP 90mm F/2.5 Macro

thinking of picking me up one of these, I have the 50d and shoot alot of night racing at 1600 ISO. How is the IQ on the 1d at ISO 1600?? also how much faster is the AF on the 1d?\

thanks

Here's an example of good ISO 3200 on the 1D2 when exposed properly. Expose poorly and high ISO speeds on the 1D2 are not your friend, it's performance in the ISO department is very sensitive to proper exposure.

^^^+1 Here is a 1600 ISO shot. Get a correct exposure I think the 1DMkII produces great files. Better than it's given credit for. But it is very sensitive to exposure. This was ISO 1600. Exposure was determined with handheld incident meter (Minolta IV-F). Cleaned up noise a little in LR3.

I have both 1DMKII and 50D. The AF on the 1D is blindingly fast compared to 50D. Absolutely no comparison.

Do you want cheap wide angle zoom on a budget? And don't everyone laugh at me or flame me:oops::rolleyes: Take a look at the Tamron 19-35: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=341747 It is marketed under several names, I have the Tokina version. There is a Quantaray version and others. You can probably pick one up for $100 or slightly more. Is it great? No. Is it an "L"? No. But stopped down it ain't bad and it will get you by until you can afford something better. I don't have the time to do the kind of shooting that I would like to do with this lens. So for me it is a cheap fun lens.

As Ron and others have said, the trick to minimizing high ISO noise is to make sure you expose adequately. The shot of the horse was at 1600. The ball player is at 3200.

And yes the AF on the one series is certainly better than the xxD bodies.

I think this maybe a little short, and I would like something that has constant AV. Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, what's your budget?

Can't go wrong with a 17-50 2.8, maybe Tokina 12-24 f/4 if you want something wider.
Might be selling my 20-35 f/2.8L soon

I want something to back up the 70-200 and 50mm(selling) a little longer, I know I have the best zoom, my feet, but also dont like to get in peoples face. Want it for indoor too.
The Tamron 24-70 is a little too much.

I've searched my HD and checked all my cards, but none of the walks, I have a set on flickr that was shot with the 24-60mm but it's not especially interesting, just a tripod head I was selling.

Yes with a filter attached.

What hood is that on your 17-40 NorCalNomad?

EW-83J it's the one that comes with the 17-55. It gives just the tiniest bit of vignetting at 17 wide open (like .1-.2) without it shaved down a little. I also run the 17-40 on a 40D a lot so it works out perfect. If I'm shooting with my Elan I'll pop the stock hood back on.

Thats the thing about aps-h (1.3x). there just arent any good wide-normal zooms out there (like the 24-70 for FF). I found 24mm to be just barely starting to get wide on aps-h, (31mm FF FOV equivalent). I would go for the 17-40L as a walkaround for 1.3x if you can swing it, otherwise go with the tamron 28-75/2.8 or sigma 24-70/2.8. Both are good, though the tamron is known for being really sharp and having great IQ for the price. The sigma is a little hit n miss.

Aps-c "normal-wide" zooms like the 17-50, 17-55 etc will NOT work on a 1DII without heavy vignetting. The tokina 12-24 will work from about 15mm-24mm without vignetting.

Don't forget about the now discontinued Tamron 17-35mm 2.8-4. Works on full frame and is a great bargain for the price you find it for used. I picked one up recently for $250 and by far my favorite lens on the 1d2. The 24-70 sits on the t2i mostly now as a walk around.

I need to stay out of the buy/sell forum. It's burning a hole in the wallet...

Sounds interesting, what about the Sigma EX 17-35 F.2.8-4, I would just have a gap, I do hate this

ukcyberboy have you look into using manual focus lens it's a cheap way to fill the gap and they also will work great on a 1D series camera.

I agree, but beware that some adapters will require minor surgery to work on the 1Dii (others too maybe). I bought two adapters recently an FD/EF and an Adaptall/EF and both needed part of the mount to be removed. This is because there's a switch at about 10 o'clock on the 1D's mount which is tripped lens mounts, making the body expect communication from the lens, and fire off an error 01 if no communication is received. The surgery just involves shaving off a bit of the mount that trips the switch.

Definitely worth considering though.
