My gear is testament to build quality the way I have dropped stuff, knocked equipment into stuff, etc...! I was sending in a body for a different repair and figured let me just get a ring put on the lens too.

I am pretty handy with most things and love to fix things myself. However there comes a time with some things that it is not worth my time. Especially when I am busy with client work.

I'de also rather not disassemble a lens. Any slight misalignment will degrade quality.

The repair probably would have been a lot cheaper if I hadn't let me CPS membership downgrade to silver. I just wasn't using it enough. At the 2nd and 3rd tier, the cleaning and calibrations are free for the first two or 3 pieces. 40% off and a free calibration would have probably made the repair less than $80. Oh well!

Canon might be worse than Apple. Love to rape their loyal customers.

I totally DISAGREE !

Canon wants you as a friend for life. Apple simply wants you as a slave.

Slave is a strong word. It's more like cult member. "All bow before the great holy Jobs who gained his powers from taking a bit of the divine holy apple".

We are talking about a product that Canon already sold, though. How much might a photographer charge to replace a damaged mat on a framed photo?

the photographer might not know how to precisely cut and change the mat, so he has to give it to a framer to fix. The framer charges the photographer $50 to fix a $5 mat on the $200 frame. The photographer bring it back to the customer and charges him a total of $100 for the job because of all the driving, pick ups and deliveries he has to do to fix the $5 mat.... :)

When i send something to Canon, i feel like i am taking my car to the mechanic. 15 dollars for parts, 1100 to put it in. Unbelievable!!!

Hey, I resemble that remark.

I own an auto repair shop. If someone complains about the labor costs, I offer to put my lowest paid, least skilled guy on their car and give them a discount. Oh, and they'll have to leave it until I don't have anything better to do, which could be weeks. No takers so far.

The sign in my front office says:
Good.
Fast.
Cheap.
Pick two.

Edit: That sounds arrogant, I know. The thing is, it's very expensive to hire and keep qualified help in this field, and I'm sure it is in a lot of others as well.

Bad analogy. I cannot imagine the mat of a framed print gets the wear or takes the abuse of a camera lens.
If you were to sell images matted but unframed at what point would you stop replacing mats for free?
I am in the service industry and noting gets right next to me like when someone complains about my labor rate. If it were easy everybody would do it. Think about the upkeep on all that equipment Canon has as well as overhead and payroll. If they did all this "easy" work for free they would go broke in shipping charges alone. If the cost bothers find someone to do it cheaper or do it yourself.

Since you could not do the red rig yourself, they are going to charge you for labor. Labor is pricey everywhere. They basically have a lock on the market, so they can charge somewhat more. I never sent one in but I would think calibration alone would probably cost this or probably more. So instead of just charging a ton for only the red ring and its replacement the OP got a calibration and a cleaning. I think you may just received a cheap calibration because of the red ring. This would only be bad if you had a perfectly calibrated lens already.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim
