Nice comparison...

It seems that though the exposure settings different (5 vs. 5.6) making the 210 a bit brighter than the 250, the wider F-stop does make the out-of-focus background more apparent there in the 210...

I think part of the problem with the 55-250 is that at the cheaper price points, the QA is much lower. There are some crazy sharp 55-250s out there (just check out the one photozone reviewed) but then a lot that look like the one in the link above.

I keep trying to find a good 70-210 lately. THey are hard to find! I hesitated on one a few months back and I haven't seen one since!

Would anyone be kind enough to provide more comparisons? I'm leaning a bit to the 70-210 for the ring USM and better build quality but the 55-250 does seem like a sharp lens with IS and with the $100 rebate it's tempted me more.

I've had both the 55-250 and the 70-210. On a crop camera, a big difference is the short end. 55 vs. 70 is pretty different.

The 210 has better contrast and color than the 55-250. It also has a non-rotating front element which (if memory serves the) the 55-250 didn't.

I loved the 55-250 and some of my favorite shots came from it. The 70-210 is faster and more sure focusing, but the focal length range of the 55-250 is very useful. They're both super cheap. You can't really go too wrong on either. The 55-250 for the focal length and IS (oh! and weight and also less zoom creep!), the 70-210 for a bit better IQ, non rotating element and faster, surer focusing.

I had finally saved up £520 but couldn't decide on which lens to pull the trigger on. Buy a 70-200F4 L or buy a decent macro lens, as both are on my hit list, but which to buy first.

Walking round a csr boot sale at the weekend a stall was selling a
70-210 3.5-4.5 for £35. ($60) Decision made, the F4 L could wait a few more months, off to buy a macro

I change this lens to a 70-200F4L but for me it seems, that the 3.5-4.5 had quicker af performance than the L version. All other quality certainly better the L version.

I can confirm it.
I bought from the Dealextreme (external link).
If You order from there, the shipping could be long time, for here Hungary it takes about 4 weeks usually.

I got it too, thanks for the confirmation, I Don't think I've seen a clip on hood ever before, so I was confused.
