I had the opportunity to shoot this event in Des Moines, IA a couple of weekends ago and had a lot of fun doing it! It was a level 8 - 10 meet of the best of the best from Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota. Here are some of my favorites, please feel free to comment and critique is always welcome!

Wow, I have to admit that I expected at least one comment.... 144 views and not one opinion? Unbelievable!

They look good to me. I think the mid-air shots loose a little perspective without the beam (mat, or other device) in the photos. I think #7 is my favorite, but it would be better without the coach (with th pink shirt) in the backround.

Plese keep in mind that I've never been to a gymnastics competition.

I like #2 just think it is a pity that her feet are cut off.

Other than that they are all really good.

I like 1 and 8, also. My daughter competed in that meet. I got a really good one on beam. Tough place to shoot. Good work.

Some good shots. Here's my humble opinion:

1. good shot, but too bad it's during warmups.
2. good capture, but both feet/toes are clipped.
3. gymnast facing the wrong way....not a keeper.
4. good, but level the horizon.
5. ok....crop tighter.
6. gymnast facing the wrong way...no face...not a keeper.
7. good. pink shirt in the background? sigh...it's just a fact of life when shooting gymnastics.
8. excellent

They are missing something. I would have gone to higher ISO to get more ambient in. They seem somehwat underexposed to me. Are these crops as you using 135mm?

I want to shoot a gymnastics meet someday.. just once to say I did.. people say volleyball and hockey are hard to shoot but I find them relatively easy with knowing the sports.. I can't even imagine getting good gymnastics shots.. dark gyms combined with flying and speed

Volleyball & Hockey are snap compared to gymnastics. I have been shooting sports for along time and my daughters gymnastics events were a true test. Small, poorly lit gyms with poor angles and really bad backgrounds.

She was level 9 and had to stop due to knee surgery. Lots of gear I can contemplate selling now that this silly gymnastics chase is over :)

These pictures are nice. But given the open air arena, I would have hoped for more flattering backgrounds, better angles and flatter horizons. Just my 2 cents.

Cool. They look good to me. Gym is hard to shoot. Light almost always sucks, but we make due.

My daughter competed in the Level 8 16 and up Region Six meet. All of New England and New York. She won 1st place on floor and 9th overall.

Here are my shots of that one. I was behind the ropes in “dad-with-cam mode”, so I had to make due with the poor angles.

That's funny, and true! Every time gym season ends and I have less need for the expensive stuff, I keep thinking of freeing up that cash. Next season is right around the corner...

Son is off to college this fall, and for that, I'm pretty much done with hockey except for the odd game I agreed to do for his old team next season. Too tempting!

Nice shots James. Number 8 is my favorite. My daughter competed at the Region 1 meet, but none of my shots were worth sharing.
