??? You're asking which lens for the Canon 7D? I'd take the 15-85 to get the wide end as the other two aren't wide in some situations. Situations where you can't back up with the lens to get the shot. ???

Im not sure I understand your question.
Are you asking which one of these you should buy?

I would go ahead over to the Lens Sample Archive and compare photos.

what do you shoot? without knowing that, who can recommend anything?

I personally love the 24-105 and would use it for a walk-around lens, but what i shoot may differ from what you like.

Before giving any good advice we should know the following:

1. Your budget
2. What you shoot and where (indoor/outdoor)
3. Any lenses in your current lineup?

As above, it depends on what you want to shoot. Having said that "L" glass is almost always a good investment.

Welcome to POTN....

We need clarification what you are asking and how you want to use the camera.

Are you are looking at the 7D in a kit with a lens and have several possible choices? Or are you looking at buying the lens separately?

If you are looking at 7D, my first question is how experienced are you with digital SLRs? It's not necessarily the best first time camera.. There is less automation, so it requires some experienced user input to get the best out of it and 7D a much more complex camera to use than some other models. The AF system, in particular, adds an additional layer of complexity on top of an already pretty "loaded up" camera. For someone just starting out, I'd point to 60D, even 50D (if one doesn't need/want video), or one of the recent Rebel/xxxD series as better cameras to learn on initially.

But, as to lenses there are a lot of possible choices. Depending upon where you are located and where you are shopping, different kits might be offered. A kit bundle often offers the best value, leaving something in the budget for other important things (memory cards, an extra battery or two, software, flash, tripod, etc.)

Here in the U.S. 7D can be found in kit with two lenses: EF-S 18-135 IS or EF 28-135 IS. Personally I would opt for the latter and about $100 cheaper kit because I know the 28-135 offers quite good image quality, is an EF lens (which allows it's use on full frame cameras, which I also use), has faster/quieter/more accurate USM and is simply a good value since it only costs $200 in kit with the camera (and normally sells for about $450 if bought new, separately, or around $250-300 lightly used).

I don't see any of the other lenses you mention offered in kit with the 7D. Some retailers offer bundles and I think some of those lenses might be offered in kit with other Canon models.

I haven't used the 15-85 IS, but it has a lot of fans. It is a USM lens, but also is an EF-S. At $780 it's pretty pricey. (For that money, I could get 28-135 + lens hood and a Tokina 12-24... Heck, 12mm to 135mm on an APS-C DSLR actually covers a greater range of focal lengths than most 35mm film shooters ever owned in their lifetimes.)

A lot of people like it, but frankly, I probably personally will never pay $1150 for a 24-105L f4 IS as long as a 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS exists and can be bought for $200 (in kit) to $300 (lightly used). I have and use the 24-70/2.8L and 28-135, and have shot a little with the 24-105... Image quality is not much different between the three... You'd be hard pressed to tell apart 11x14 prints made with each lens... The main differences are build/durability, perhaps a little better resistance to dust. But IMO the step up is minor for so much additional cost. The f2.8 of the 24-70 makes it stand apart (as well as more even expensive, bigger and heavier).

Haven't used the Tamron at all. Again, I see some fans here. I'd check out it's focus performance. AFAIK, only Canon and Sigma have USM/HSM "ring type" focus, which tends to be the fastest, quietest and most accurate. This isn't critical on Ultra Wide lenses (such as the Tokina 12-24 or 11-16, which only have to move a focus group slightly to focus), but IMO is more important on a walk-around lens like we're discussing here, as well as on longer focal lengths, macro lenses, etc.

There is a little bit of a price difference between the 15-85 and the 24-70 2.8! If you're not doing a lot indoor shooting the 24-105 is probably your best all around lens mentioned by the others members.

Good luck:
