Hi,

I own Canon 17-85 mm IS lens for about 3 yrs now and have used it extensively as my walk around lens.. after my last trip i found that it is finding hard to auto-focus at 85mm. Iam sure it is not because of light, even in daylight its the same.. pls help/advice, I can send it to Canon repair center but want to confirm if there is really a problem with the lens as they charge 99$ for looking into that + the actual cost. Kindly let me know if i can run some tests to find out the fault.
Thanks

Hi, I had exactly the same problem with the 17-85. The lens would focus and then immediately pull back a little, its worse at longer focal lengths. I looked into it and apparently it is very common with this lens once it gets a couple of years use. I had mine repaired (£160) and they fitted a new Ultrasonic drive and since then it has been fine. Hope this helps. :)

Cheers

Specific to this lens--the ribbon cable to the AF motor has a history of problems.

At the price of a nice used lens I have just bought replacements--its a pity Canon feels no need to correct known issues.

I had one that would not lock focus past 50mm below that it was fine.
