When you reconfigure I'd recommend the padded dividers.

Do you like them because they are easier to change? I had them before, in a much smaller case, and I prefer how secure the foam holds everything in place. I eventually had to replace the foam in my last case, but I'm not sure if that's enough to make me switch to the dividers...

I'm getting the lid organizer too, so I'll need something to put between the gear and the mesh organizer on the lid.

I like the dividers because they: are easier to setup, can be reconfigured for changing gear, are a more efficient use of space, and seem to last longer. As my kit grew over the past two years I went from a 1400 case with foam to a 1450 case with foam to currently the 1450 with dividers. Changing from the 1450 foam to dividers allowed me to add one more lens, a blower, and some other odds and ends to the same size box. I setup my pelican box so I can have any of my lenses on the body and still fit it in the case.

I have used the left over foam blocks from previous foam setups to fill in the divided sections where necessary to keep my gear secured or to add extra padding under long lenses.

The bottom foam layer (under the blocks) in your current setup may work to cushion the top layer of gear from the lid organizer. If you wanted to get fancy you could cover it with nylon fabric and add a panel that could be slid in to act as a hinge. Another option might be an appropriate sized neoprene laptop case across the top.

I have a 1560 with foam configured for all of my gear (no pictures, though.) It's been a great case to lug around but it's not a carry-on so I decided to downsize to a 1514:

IMAGE: http://www.vintage-computer.com/images/misc/Pelican.jpg

5D2 w/24-105, 70-200 II, 85L II, 1.4x, 580EXII, remote, Lee filter kit, chargers, cleaning supplies, focus screen, batteries, cards, etc.

If I pull the Lee kit I can stuff the Rebel in with the flash. I'm planning on the lid organizer for the small stuff so I can carry another lens (16-35) when I get it.

I had planned on selling the 1560 but with no hits on CL I'm starting to think I'll keep it... :P

I do like the black. I almost bought a used 1550 because it had the blue dividers that looked nice and I understand they don't make them anymore. But after seeing the black on black I think I'm happy with what I got. Plus I got a great deal on amazon thru my gold box.

Got my 1600 today. Bought through an ebay re-seller, for around half RRP. Was dubious as to it being genuine, but it came in the original box with all pelican warranty cards.

Pelican 1510. Finally got around to plucking the foam. For future reference, consider the internal "bumps" of the wheels and handle indents on the bottom of the case when planning your layout. The 24-105 in the upper left corner only has a little foam between it and the case wheel well. I should have planned better. Overall, I am happy with the foam. I may be in the minority but it really does a good job of securing items and preventing movement.
