OK, since all of you experts seem confused with hypothetical situations involving apparitions and strobes

i took the liberty of sending Rob a PM and together we decided it's best to let the Alien Bee thread figure this one out

Sooooo..... Elinchrom users only- whatcha got?

I added a pair of 300RX's a couple of weeks ago. Purchased from Amazon at $624 shipped, although only one was in stock. Hopefully the other will also ship soon. Adorama used to have them at this price for a while but put the price up to $850, which was the tipping point for me to purchase from Amazon.

I wasn't really intending to add any more lights but out of interest today I chased a CL listing for a pair of 1200RX units. Turns out they were brand new in the box, Elinchrom tape still intact. The seller ( not a photographer ... his dad was ) knew their new value but just wanted to move them ... too good a price to ignore so I helped them go to a new home :D

Regarding "blur"; a strobes output is measured at t.5 and t.1. Generally as power is reduced these times get longer. That is what makes the hyper sync a viable option for using shutter speeds greater than sync speed. The monolight is essentially a short duration constant light source.

That also means that a fast moving subject will be blurred.

Speedlites, and other strobes using an IGBT method for quenching the flash below full power effectively cut off the tail and eliminate the light that causes the blurring. It also means that IGBT controlled lights are not useful for hyper sync below fill power.

Nice! I missed seeing that today until just now. Was that price for the *pair*?!

Congrats on the RX units, very nice. I've settled on the BXRi's, don't do enough indoor studio work to justify the nicer RX units.

Nope, that was his asking price each ... but we came to an agreement for the pair.

Have you had a chance to try out your new Quadra ? My Maxilite just showed up this week ( already had the honeygrid ) so give me a shout if you want to try it out.

I do indoor studio quite a bit. The BXRi is better for outdoors?

I'm not getting the reference to being better indoors or outdoors. There's nothing about any of the Elinchrom monolights that makes one better on location over another, except that the D-Lite's can't be remotely controlled. Other than that, they all perform well.

If the reference to outdoors is about using a larger, heaver modifier, then sure, the BXRi has a slightly better build than the D-Lite and the RX has a better build than the BXRi in terms of carrying the weight or a large modifier.

Actually, one thing that makes the D-Lite great in certain situations is the fact that they are super light. A 600RX weighs in at 5.75 pounds. A D-Lite 4 is only 2.86 pounds. If you're flying the strobe off the end of a 6 foot boom then shaving almost 3 pounds off the load is significant.
