'Need' is a subjective thing. There is no right or wrong and it's a creative preference.

Im gonna be honest I don't think this really needs a hairlight. I like the mood its setting Scott.

gotta agree with you, I like it and theres enough separation of the hair and background on my monitor. excellent shot

It's all relative Scott. The image looks very good but your own creative preference will determine whether you need to make adjustments.

May I ask what your setup was? How and from where are you lighting the background? I really like that series of shot

Awesome job man!

The model was 4 feet from the paper and the octa lite the background.

Exposure 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture f/5.6
Focal Length 140 mm
ISO Speed 100
Exposure Bias 0 EV

Andrea Elynne Model

2 strip boxes turned into opposite shoulders f/5.6
200 cm octa camera left main f/7.1
32" umbrella camera right fill
600w Smith Victor barn door lamp for the bright eyes/small pupils and focus.

The octa was 6 feet camera left and right on the edge of my lens focus area. The 2 strips were 3 feet on either side of the model feathered opposite shoulders. The umbrella was 9 feet back from the model camera right. The 600w Smith Victor studio light was about 12-14 feet back from the model camera right. For the 600ws light to effect my image I have to shoot at a shutter speed of under 1/80 sec.

Hope thats what you wanted to know

There's a story pertaining to this image on flickr (as well as lighting info). It's an interesting read. ;-)a

Initial reaction would have been pizzedashell . Fortunately, you weren't by your equipment when it happened.

Should I just give up ? How can I even get close to this kind of talent?

Jet black hair is distinctive enough from the gray background. Maybe it's the gray outfit that's throwing things off? Looks good to me, though.
