Maybe it's the design for the focal length. I think the Nikon one is the same. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The advantage with that is that it gets the best out of the hood. At 24mm it needs to see wide so the lens element gets close to the front of the hood. At 70mm, the lens element hides far inside the hood for best flare protection.

It's quite brilliant in my opinion, the only zoom that has a hood that works properly for both wide and tele.
