The focus motor is loud, apart from that I have no issues with it at all. I certainly wouldn't swap it for a 17-40 even though I have full frame and crop cameras, f4 just doesn't cut it for me.

Yes but in the end, if you had the 17-40 would you swap it for the Tamron, unlikely, the focus motor is pathetic.

I've got the Tamron and I've got an L, the difference is huge and I couldnt imagine downgrading, even for f/2.8.

The Tamron is way sharper at f/4 anyways which is where i like to shoot if I'm looking for bokeh and want a sharp image.

No, you're right, I wouldn't swap it for a Tamron - I'd swap it for a 17-55 2.8.

I am a little confused. You say the difference is huge then go on to say that the Tamron is sharper....I am confused.

The 17-55 2.8 is possibly one of the biggest wastes of money in the entire Canon lens lineup. I'll take the Tamron over that one any day of the week and keep an extra $400 in my bank account.

Just got my tamron 17-50 and so far it delivers great image quality. It really is surprisingly sharp. It is very usable at f2.8 and amazing at f4. The only issue with it is loud AF motor but it doesn't matter 90% of time i'd use it. So far i'm totally loving it :)

While I can't directly compare 17-40L and tamron 17-50 since I used L glass on my Canon 350D and the tammy on the 40D that i recently bought. I must say tamron delivers better image quality than 17-40L and f4 really doesn't cut it on a body which can't handle higher iso.

Big call. Each to their own, I have used one - sharper than my Tammy at 2.8 and very fast and quiet AF.

I've had this lens for a couple of years now, and it rarely disappoints.

Here's one from a fishing trip a couple days ago, taken with a CPL.

for some time now I have this problem with my tamron. on the left side it seems like much more blur.
sometimes it does not interfere, but sometimes it's annoying.
maybe someone can advise where can be the problem?

common problem, the plane of focus is slightly skewed. Send it for calibration, it's a physical problem with the moving element when you zoom.
