My friend and I had already noticed some sort of celebration going on near the old abbey at Abbey Wood and I'd thought it was an outdoor wedding reception having seen the 'reception marquee' and a couple of the 'bridesmaids'. As the church music started up we continued with our picnic.

When this lady appeared, walking towards the celebrations, I thought to myself, "I bet she's going to the wedding."

A little while later a procession of what seemed like hundreds of people came over the hill and we saw the boys in their red-striped robes and the girls in their 'bridesmaid' dresses, we realised what it must be: a First Communion service:

Looks more like a procession of the Blessed Sacrament for the feast of Corpus Christi which was either celebrated on June 23rd or moved to Sunday the 26th. For this procession the children who have just received their 1st Holy Communion get to lead the procession. Catholics believe the Blessed Sacrament to be the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ made present in the host by a Catholic priest.

Yep, that's what this is.

Thanks, guys. What was interesting about it to us was that it was held in a marquee on the grass in the middle of the ruins of Lesnes Abbey at Abbey Wood in London, and the procession seemed to be encircling the entire Abbey and its immediate surroundings.
