Hehehehe, I took it the night that we had the closest moon etc. etc. excellent illumination that night.

Thank you. I made it down to the beach for sunset and that shot was as I left La Jolla. SOOOOO yes it was.

My first real attempt at night work. Experimented with various apertures and shutter speeds. It was very humid out, it appears these long distance night landscapes are much clearer in winter's dry air..I'll let you know in about six months

Nice start... yes, that is true, warmer weather tends to bring more moisture into the air.

However the Summer is usually best for things like the Milky Way.

Your shots look good, but you need some clouds or to shoot earlier in the evening when you can still pull some blue color out of the skies.

You may also want to try shooting night stuff using Tungsten white balance. Of course, RAW is ideal but I often shoot with Tungsten, just so that I can see what the scene will look like with out the yellow/pinkish cast of the light pollution. Using a cooler WB will help these shots, I believe.

I thought the winter was better...

Summer is usually regarded the best time, at least in the northern hemisphere because the density is greatest towards Saggitarius which is a "Summer" constellation.
